Mumbai: Filmmaker Nikkhil Advani is reportedly set to revisit his romantic anthology Salaam-e-Ishq with a sequel nearly two decades after the release of the original film.
According to reports, Advani is currently developing Salaam-e-Ishq 2, which is expected to expand the original concept into a larger franchise centred around love, relationships and destiny.
The upcoming sequel will reportedly focus on the lives of three couples whose journeys intersect through emotional circumstances and fate.
Unlike the original 2007 film, which featured several interconnected love stories and a massive ensemble cast, the sequel is expected to adopt a more contemporary approach while exploring modern relationships in India.
Sequel to focus on modern relationships
Reports suggest that Salaam-e-Ishq 2 will delve into present-day relationship dynamics, including themes such as commitment issues, societal expectations, emotional struggles and personal conflicts faced by couples.
The film is expected to portray changing perspectives on love and relationships among younger generations while maintaining the emotional storytelling style associated with the original movie.
Industry sources indicate that the project is currently in the writing stage, with production likely to begin early next year.
Advani is also reportedly planning to assemble another prominent multi-generational ensemble cast for the sequel, although the characters and storyline will be entirely new.
No official casting announcements have been made so far.
Original film gained cult following over time
The original Salaam-e-Ishq, released in 2007, featured a star-studded cast including Salman Khan, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, John Abraham, Vidya Balan, Govinda, Anil Kapoor, Juhi Chawla, Akshaye Khanna and Sohail Khan among others.
Although the film did not perform strongly at the box office during its theatrical run, it gradually earned a cult following among audiences over the years.
Many viewers appreciated its emotional narratives, interconnected storytelling style and memorable music album.
Film critics and fans later regarded the movie as one of the more ambitious romantic anthologies in mainstream Hindi cinema during that period.
Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy likely to return
One of the major highlights of the reported sequel is the expected return of celebrated music trio Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy.
The trio had composed the soundtrack for the original film, which became highly popular among audiences.
Songs such as Dil Kya Kare, Mera Dil, Tenu Leke and Saiyaan Re continue to enjoy popularity even years after the film’s release.
Music is expected to once again play a significant role in shaping the emotional tone of the sequel.
Industry observers believe nostalgia associated with the original soundtrack could help generate anticipation among audiences for the upcoming project.
Romantic anthologies regain popularity
The reported development of Salaam-e-Ishq 2 comes at a time when romantic dramas and anthology-style storytelling are once again attracting attention in Indian cinema and streaming platforms.
Filmmakers have increasingly explored relationship-driven narratives reflecting changing urban lifestyles, emotional complexities and contemporary social expectations.
Observers believe Advani’s decision to revisit the franchise could appeal to both audiences familiar with the original film and younger viewers seeking modern romantic stories.
While an official announcement from the makers is still awaited, the reports surrounding the sequel have already generated considerable interest among Bollywood fans and music lovers.
If confirmed, Salaam-e-Ishq 2 could mark the return of one of Hindi cinema’s well-known romantic anthology franchises with a fresh perspective for a new generation.
