New Delhi: Actress and dancer Nora Fatehi has reportedly been summoned by the National Commission for Women (NCW) in connection with the controversy surrounding the song Sarke Chunar from the upcoming Kannada film KD – The Devil.
According to reports, Nora Fatehi was initially called by the commission on May 6 and has now been asked to appear before the authorities on May 7 at 11:30 am.
The controversy around the song has continued to escalate in recent weeks, drawing widespread criticism on social media and renewed scrutiny regarding lyrical content and portrayal of women in mainstream cinema.
Song triggered criticism after Hindi release
The row reportedly began after the Hindi version of “Sarke Chunar” was released online earlier this year.
Soon after the track’s release in March, several social media users criticised the song for what they described as explicit and suggestive lyrics.
Questions were also raised about the representation of women in the song and the accountability of filmmakers and creators involved in producing such content.
The controversy quickly gained traction online, leading to public debate over censorship, artistic freedom, and social responsibility in commercial entertainment.
Nora Fatehi reportedly distanced herself
According to reports, Nora Fatehi had earlier attempted to distance herself from the controversy by clarifying that she had only filmed the Kannada version of the song.
The actress reportedly informed authorities that her consent had not been obtained for the Hindi adaptation of the track.
When the NCW initially summoned her regarding the matter, Nora Fatehi allegedly stated that she was outside the country and requested an alternative hearing date.
The commission has now reportedly rescheduled her appearance.
Neither the actress nor her representatives have issued a fresh public statement following the latest summons.
Sanjay Dutt also faced scrutiny
The controversy has already drawn other members of the film’s cast into legal and public scrutiny.
Last month, actor Sanjay Dutt, who also appeared in the dance number, was summoned by the NCW regarding the same issue.
Following his interaction with the commission, Sanjay Dutt reportedly issued an apology note expressing regret over his association with the song.
According to reports, the actor also expressed support for women’s welfare initiatives and agreed to sponsor the education of 50 tribal girl children as part of a social commitment linked to the controversy.
Debate grows over content in mainstream cinema
The “Sarke Chunar” controversy has reignited larger conversations surrounding the responsibilities of filmmakers, music producers, and actors regarding lyrical content and gender representation in entertainment.
Critics have argued that songs featuring sexually suggestive content can contribute to problematic portrayals of women, while others have defended artistic freedom and creative expression.
Industry observers note that increasing scrutiny from regulatory bodies and public opinion is reshaping discussions around acceptable content standards in cinema and music.
The NCW’s involvement has further intensified public attention on the matter.
KD – The Devil remains highly anticipated
Despite the controversy, “KD – The Devil” continues to remain one of the most anticipated Kannada films currently under production.
The film stars Dhruva Sarja in the lead role and features an ensemble cast including:
- Shilpa Shetty
- V. Ravichandran
- Reeshma Nanaiah
- Jisshu Sengupta
The project has generated considerable attention due to its scale, cast, and production value.
However, the ongoing controversy surrounding “Sarke Chunar” continues to cast a shadow over the film’s promotional campaign.
Authorities yet to make further statement
As of now, the NCW has not issued detailed public comments regarding the next steps in the matter.
Legal experts suggest that the commission’s proceedings may focus on accountability, consent, and concerns regarding the adaptation and presentation of the song’s content.
With the controversy continuing to gain traction online, further developments are expected following Nora Fatehi’s reported appearance before the commission.
