Kochi: Fans eagerly awaiting the return of Sachin and Reenu will have to wait longer, as actor Naslen has confirmed that Premalu 2 has been shelved for the time being due to creative concerns surrounding the screenplay.

While the announcement comes as a disappointment to audiences, Naslen clarified that the sequel has not been permanently abandoned and could still be revived in the future if the makers develop a script that meets their expectations.

Makers halt sequel over script concerns

Speaking in a recent interview, Naslen revealed that the production team decided not to proceed with the project after concluding that the screenplay had not achieved the level of perfection they were aiming for.

According to the actor, the team explored the possibility of taking the story forward but ultimately felt the script required further development before it could be brought to the screen.

He added that the project has been officially cancelled for now, although the possibility of revisiting it remains open.

Producer had hinted at uncertainty

Naslen’s remarks echo earlier comments made by producer Dileesh Pothan, who had previously indicated that the future of the sequel was uncertain.

The makers had announced plans for a follow-up after the phenomenal success of the original film, generating considerable excitement among fans eager to see the next chapter in the lives of the lead characters.

However, updates on the sequel remained limited in recent months, leading to speculation about delays and creative challenges.

Premalu became a major box-office success

Directed by Girish AD, Premalu emerged as one of the biggest Malayalam hits of 2024.

The film was produced by Bhavana Studios, Fahadh Faasil and Friends, and Working Class Hero.

Alongside Naslen and Mamitha Baiju in the lead roles, the film featured performances from Sangeeth Prathap, Akhila Bhargavan, Shyam Mohan, Meenakshi Raveendran, Mathew Thomas and Althaf Salim.

The romantic comedy crossed the ₹100 crore mark at the box office and received widespread appreciation for its relatable storytelling, humour and youthful appeal.

Story struck a chord with audiences

Set in Hyderabad, the film followed Sachin, a young graduate whose plans to move to the United Kingdom are disrupted. He later relocates to Hyderabad for GATE coaching, where he meets Reenu, leading to a charming and relatable romance.

The film’s contemporary treatment of relationships and coming-of-age themes resonated with viewers across languages, helping it become a pan-Indian success.

Future of sequel remains open

Although Premalu 2 is no longer moving forward in its current form, the makers have not completely ruled out a sequel.

For now, fans may have to wait until the creative team develops a story that lives up to the expectations set by the original blockbuster. Until then, the future of Sachin and Reenu’s journey remains uncertain.
