Mumbai: Actor Prithviraj Sukumaran has opened up about his experience of working with filmmaker Meghna Gulzar in the upcoming thriller Daayra, describing the collaboration as one he had long hoped for.

The film, which also stars Kareena Kapoor Khan, is scheduled to hit theatres on September 18, 2026.

Prithviraj says he has long admired Meghna Gulzar’s work

Speaking about the filmmaker, Prithviraj said he has closely followed Meghna Gulzar’s body of work and admired the stories she chooses to tell.

“The one filmmaker who I have really been following in terms of craft and the stories she chooses to say and the way she says it, is Meghna Gulzar,” the actor said.

Prithviraj also reflected on his experience of filming Daayra, revealing that the project turned out to be one of the most enjoyable experiences of his career.

“I finished working with them and I had such a great experience. I had so much fun working with Meghna. I don’t think I’ve argued so much with any filmmaker,” he said.

However, the actor chose not to elaborate on the nature of those creative disagreements, saying the details could be discussed after the film’s release.

‘She is an incredible filmmaker’

Praising the director further, Prithviraj described Meghna Gulzar as both a wonderful person and an exceptional filmmaker.

He said he was grateful that she considered him for the project and equally thankful that he managed to make time in his busy schedule to be part of the film.

According to the actor, the experience of working on Daayra proved immensely rewarding both professionally and creatively.

Film explores questions about justice

Offering a glimpse into the film’s themes, Prithviraj said Daayra raises difficult and unsettling questions without providing easy answers.

He described it as a film that takes an objective view of justice and the delivery of justice within the system.

According to the actor, one of the film’s greatest strengths lies in the way Meghna Gulzar handles sensitive material without taking sides.

He said the narrative continually asks questions and challenges viewers to form their own opinions rather than guiding them towards a particular conclusion.

Prithviraj noted that maintaining such neutrality is difficult for any filmmaker, especially when dealing with emotionally charged subject matter.

Inspired by true events

Daayra is directed by Meghna Gulzar and written by Meghna Gulzar, Yash Keswani and Sima Agarwal.

The film is produced by Junglee Pictures and Pen Studios and is reportedly inspired by true events.

The project marks Meghna Gulzar’s third collaboration with Junglee Pictures following the critically acclaimed films Raazi and Talvar.

It also marks the first co-production between Junglee Pictures and Pen Studios.

With an intriguing premise and a cast led by Prithviraj Sukumaran and Kareena Kapoor Khan, Daayra is among the most anticipated Hindi releases of 2026 and is set to arrive in cinemas on September 18.
