Mumbai: Actor-filmmaker Riteish Deshmukh and actor Genelia Deshmukh’s 10-year-old son Rahyl is set to make his acting debut in the upcoming historical film Raja Shivaji, whose trailer was unveiled at a star-studded event in Mumbai.

Young Rahyl steps into the role of Shivaji Maharaj

Born in 2016, Rahyl Deshmukh plays the young Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in the film, while Riteish Deshmukh himself essays the role of the iconic Maratha warrior king in his adult years. The project marks a significant milestone for the Deshmukh family, with father and son sharing the same character across timelines.

The trailer reflects strong themes of Maratha pride, history and the struggle for swarajya, showcasing Shivaji Maharaj’s battles against the Mughal and Adil Shahi dynasties.

Genelia plays Saibai; strong supporting cast

In the film, Genelia Deshmukh portrays Saibai, the wife of Shivaji Maharaj. The film also features a powerful ensemble cast including Sanjay Dutt, Vidya Balan and Abhishek Bachchan in pivotal roles.

Backed by Mumbai Film Company and presented by Jio Studios, the film is slated for release on May 1, coinciding with Maharashtra Day.

A decade-long journey for Riteish Deshmukh

Speaking at the trailer launch, Riteish Deshmukh described Raja Shivaji as a “labour of love” that took nearly a decade to materialise. He revealed that his ambition to portray Shivaji Maharaj dates back to 2016 but faced multiple delays.

“It’s been 10 years… I first wanted to play Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in 2016, but it didn’t happen. Then I tried again, and COVID happened,” he said, turning emotional during the event.

Riteish added that the journey tested his patience and faith, as he felt the project would only come together at the right time.

Genelia’s unwavering support

The emotional highlight of the event came when Riteish acknowledged Genelia’s constant support throughout the years. He credited her for standing by him during the long and uncertain journey of bringing the film to life.

“Dreaming is not a big deal… anyone can dream. But having someone who stands by you while you are dreaming—that is Genelia,” he said, visibly moved. Genelia, who has also co-produced the film along with Jyoti Deshpande, was seen getting emotional as well.

Rahyl and Riaan win hearts off screen

Rahyl, the younger son of the couple, has often been seen alongside his elder brother Riaan, born in 2014, during public appearances. The siblings have frequently garnered praise on social media for their polite gestures, especially greeting paparazzi with a traditional namaste.

Rahyl’s entry into films at a young age has already generated curiosity among fans, who are eager to see how he performs in a role as significant as young Shivaji Maharaj.
