Raj Kapoor Centenary: Celebrating the Legacy of Cinema’s Greatest Showman

To mark the 100th birth anniversary of legendary filmmaker Raj Kapoor, a special retrospective titled Raj Kapoor 100 – Celebrating the Centenary of the Greatest Showman’ will be held from December 13 to 15. This three-day event, organized by RK Films, the Film Heritage Foundation, NFDC, NFAI, and cinemas across India, will feature 10 of Raj Kapoor’s iconic films, screened in 40 cities and 135 cinemas.

Earlier this year, Raj Kapoor’s contributions to Indian cinema were also honored at global events like the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), the Festival des 3 Continents, and the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa, where screenings and discussions highlighted his immense impact.

Regarded as the ‘greatest showman’ of Indian cinema, Raj Kapoor’s films resonated with audiences far beyond India, especially in the former Soviet Union and the Middle East, where his characters and music became legendary. Ranbir Kapoor, who paid tribute to his grandfather at IFFI, expressed that he admired Raj Kapoor more as a filmmaker than as an actor. He emphasized how Raj Kapoor’s films, such as Awaara and Shree 420, carried messages of social reform, tackling issues like casteism, greed, and societal inequities, making his work resonate with audiences worldwide.

This centenary celebration is a fitting tribute to Raj Kapoor’s extraordinary legacy in shaping Indian cinema and his universal appeal across borders.
