New Delhi: It was a landmark day for fans of superstar Rajinikanth as the legendary actor turned 75, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of his extraordinary cinematic journey. Adding to the celebrations, his 1999 blockbuster Padayappa returned to theatres across Tamil Nadu after 26 years, prompting emotional reactions, massive gatherings and festival-like scenes at cinema halls.

Frenzied celebrations at Rohini theatre

At Chennai’s iconic Rohini Silver Screens, the atmosphere was nothing short of electric. Hundreds of fans gathered as early as 8 am to relive the thrill of a “first day, first show” experience—something many had last enjoyed in 1999 when Padayappa originally hit theatres. Outside the premises, enthusiastic fans performed paal abhishekam on a towering Rajinikanth cutout, sparking thunderous applause and chants of “Thalaiva!”.

Inside the theatre premises, cakes were cut to celebrate both the superstar’s birthday and the film’s return to the big screen. The mood was jubilant, emotional and steeped in nostalgia.

Fans travel across states to celebrate Thalaiva

Among the earliest to reach the venue was Kishore Sai, who travelled all the way from Hyderabad wearing a Padayappa-themed T-shirt. Speaking to NDTV, he said, “For me, my Thalaiva’s birthday is more important than my own. I’ve watched Padayappa countless times, but watching it today is something else.”

A young medico, who had taken the day off to attend the re-release, added, “Only Rajini can mesmerise every generation—from kids to elders—for fifty years.”

Special appearances and surprises for the audience

Adding an emotional element to the event were Jaswanthi and Janani, daughters of Padayappa director K. S. Ravikumar. Speaking about the experience, Jaswanthi said, “I wasn’t even born when the film released, so this is surreal.” Janani added, “It’s a film that carries dad’s unmistakable stamp. We’re loving the moment.”

Fans inside the auditorium were also treated to a specially designed exclusive gift—a watch that lights up in sync with the film’s music. Excited viewers said the surprise amplified the celebratory mood, making the experience even more memorable.

Among the audience were notable industry names including line producer Thenappan and stunt master Kamal Kannan.
“The film will become a blockbuster all over again,” Thenappan predicted confidently. Kannan recalled choreographing the iconic bare-body fight sequence, describing it as one of the most challenging yet cherished moments in his career.

Rajinikanth’s inspirational journey honoured

Rajinikanth’s life story—his transformation from a Bengaluru bus conductor to one of India’s most celebrated and influential cinematic icons—remains a source of inspiration for millions. As fans celebrated his birthday and film milestones, the admiration for his humility, discipline and unique style was evident everywhere.

Thiruengadam, an aspiring lyricist and singer, performed a special tribute song he composed for the superstar. Emotionally overwhelmed, he said, “Just looking at a picture of Rajinikanth soothes me.”

Anticipation grows for future projects

With a filmography exceeding 170 titles, Rajinikanth continues to draw massive attention with every new project. Fans at the re-release expressed their heartfelt hopes for what they call the “ultimate dream”—the return of the legendary Rajinikanth–Kamal Haasan duo on screen.

“We want that. That would be the ultimate,” said Reshmi, a tech professional, reflecting the widespread anticipation shared across the fan community.

Conclusion

Rajinikanth’s 75th birthday, combined with the golden jubilee of his cinematic journey and the re-release of Padayappa, created a historic day of celebrations across Tamil Nadu.
