There’s something deeply unsettling about the phrase, “Based on a true story.” In the realm of thrillers and horror films, it instantly triggers that “Oh my gosh!” moment for audiences. These real-life inspirations often leave a lasting emotional impact, one that fictional plots can rarely match.

Actor Tovino Thomas recently addressed this phenomenon while promoting his film ‘Narivetta’, a gripping take on the 2003 Muthanga incident. Though not a direct re-enactment, the movie draws heavily from reality. Tovino wrote, “It’s a subject that deserves bold conversation. I hope this film stirs your thoughts long after the credits roll.” Early reviews indicate that it’s resonating well with viewers.

Similarly, the Jeethu Joseph–Asif Ali thriller ‘Kooman’ coincidentally released around the time of Kerala’s shocking Elanthoor human sacrifice case. Despite no direct link, the audience felt a surreal connection due to the timing and dark narrative.

The horror-comedy ‘Romancham’ delivered jump scares and laughs, but the real kicker came at the end — real photos flashed on screen confirming it was inspired by actual events, sending shivers down spines.

Director Tharun Moorthy’s thriller ‘Thudarum’, featuring Mohanlal, taps into the haunting memory of honor killings like the 2018 Kevin murder. Though fictional, it captures the emotional turmoil tied to such crimes. “We studied the mental conflicts behind such acts,” Moorthy told OTT Play.

True crime-based films continue to blur the lines between reality and fiction — and audiences can’t look away.
