Mumbai: Birla Studios, in collaboration with Vodafone Idea Limited, has announced the launch of ‘Reel Se Real Star’, a mobile-first acting talent discovery platform aimed at transforming access to India’s entertainment industry.
The initiative seeks to identify and nurture aspiring actors from across the country by removing traditional barriers such as geography, industry connections, and access to auditions.
Vision to make talent discovery inclusive
The platform is built on the idea that talent can emerge from anywhere and should not be restricted by opportunity gaps. Speaking about the initiative, Ananya Birla, Founder and Chairperson of Birla Studios, said the project aims to create equitable access for aspiring performers.
She highlighted that despite the abundance of talent in India, many individuals remain excluded due to lack of exposure and access. By combining digital infrastructure with creative vision, the platform intends to open new pathways for discovery.
Nationwide digital audition model
‘Reel Se Real Star’ will operate through a fully digital, app- and web-based system, allowing participants to upload audition videos directly without requiring referrals or physical presence.
This approach is expected to significantly widen participation, enabling individuals from both urban centres and remote areas to showcase their abilities.
According to organisers, the platform will integrate large-scale public participation with structured evaluation, ensuring that talent is assessed fairly and transparently.
Industry mentorship and opportunities
A key feature of the initiative is mentorship from established directors and creative professionals, who will guide participants throughout the process.
The selected winners will receive a breakthrough opportunity to act in a feature film, working alongside an established filmmaker—offering a direct entry point into mainstream cinema.
Leveraging telecom reach
Abhijit Kishore emphasised the role of digital connectivity in enabling such initiatives. With Vodafone Idea’s network reaching over 20 crore users, the platform is expected to have extensive nationwide reach.
He noted that the initiative aims to ensure that talent discovery is not limited by location, allowing participation from metro cities as well as rural regions.
Registration and rollout
While the platform will go live for participation on the Vi app in the coming months, interested users can currently register through Birla Studios’ and Vodafone Idea’s official websites.
The organisers aim to build a robust pipeline of diverse acting talent, reflecting India’s cultural and regional diversity.
Conclusion
The launch of ‘Reel Se Real Star’ marks a significant step towards democratising access to the entertainment industry. By leveraging digital technology and industry expertise, the initiative seeks to bridge long-standing gaps in talent discovery and create meaningful opportunities for aspiring actors across India.
