A newly restored 4K version of Umrao Jaan, directed by Muzaffar Ali, is set to have its European premiere at the UK Asian Film Festival, which opens next week in London.

The restored print of the 1981 classic, featuring Rekha in one of her most iconic roles, will be screened at the BFI IMAX. The screening will be followed by an interaction with the filmmaker.

4K restoration by National Film Archive

The restoration has been undertaken by the National Film Archive of India, aiming to preserve and present the film in enhanced visual quality for modern audiences.

Umrao Jaan remains one of the most celebrated works in Indian cinema, known for its evocative storytelling, music, and Rekha’s award-winning performance as a Lucknow courtesan and poet.

Festival theme and highlights

Now in its 28th year, the UK Asian Film Festival will revolve around the theme “Stories That Bind Us,” focusing on narratives that connect communities and cultures across South Asia and the diaspora.

Festival founder and director Pushpinder Chowdhry said the line-up aims to celebrate bold storytelling and spark meaningful conversations.

The festival will also feature the UK premiere of Baksho Bondi (Shadowbox), directed by Tanushree Das and Saumyananda Sahi, and starring Tillotama Shome.

Tribute to cinema and music legends

Beyond film screenings, the festival will host a live music tribute titled “Magical Melodies,” celebrating the legacy of O. P. Nayyar, Dharmendra, and Asha Bhosle.

As part of its British Asian segment, screenings will also be held at the Kiln Theatre, featuring stories rooted in the lived experiences of South Asian communities in the UK. This includes the British Punjabi drama Never Had A Chance by Jazz Bhalla.

Lifetime honour for Muzaffar Ali

The festival will conclude on May 10 with the UKAFF Awards, where Muzaffar Ali will be honoured with the Golden Flame Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his contribution to cinema.

Creative director Samir Bhamra emphasised that the festival’s selection reflects the diversity and depth of South Asian storytelling.

A timeless cinematic classic

Released in 1981, Umrao Jaan is based on Umrao Jaan Ada by Mirza Hadi Ruswa. The film traces the life of a courtesan navigating love, loss, and societal constraints in Lucknow.

The film received widespread critical acclaim and won multiple honours at the National Film Awards, including Best Actress for Rekha. It also earned accolades at the Filmfare Awards, further cementing its legacy.

Conclusion

The European premiere of the restored Umrao Jaan at the UK Asian Film Festival marks a significant moment for classic Indian cinema, bringing a timeless story to new audiences in a revitalised form while celebrating the enduring power of storytelling.
