Chennai: Director and actor RJ Balaji recently met Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay and expressed heartfelt gratitude for the latter’s early contribution to his film Karuppu, which has emerged as a major commercial success.

Sharing pictures of the meeting on social media, Balaji described the moment as “unreal” and credited Vijay for playing a crucial role in the film’s journey, even though he did not ultimately star in it.

A meeting filled with gratitude

In his post, Balaji wrote, “With the man who started it all for #Karuppu!!! Wow! Feels unreal to meet him now as the honourable Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu!!! Same love, warmth, kindness and calmness!!! Thank you for everything dearest Vijay sir.”

The interaction comes shortly after Vijay assumed office as the Chief Minister, marking a significant transition from his long-standing career in cinema to active politics.

Vijay was the original choice

Balaji had earlier revealed that Vijay was initially considered for the lead role in Karuppu. The project was conceptualised with the superstar in mind and was discussed extensively during multiple script narration sessions.

According to the director, the film was envisioned as a potential final acting project for Vijay before his full-time political entry. However, Vijay decided to step away from the project, choosing instead to focus on his political commitments.

Despite declining the role, Vijay’s involvement during the early stages proved instrumental. Balaji noted that the actor’s feedback and probing questions significantly improved the script.

“He asked the right questions, and those questions made my script better,” Balaji had shared in an earlier interview, highlighting how Vijay’s insights helped refine the narrative.

How Karuppu found Suriya

After Vijay opted out, production house Dream Warrior Pictures suggested that Balaji pitch the script to Suriya. The story eventually found its lead actor in Suriya, who went on to headline the fantasy-action drama.

Balaji acknowledged that Vijay’s willingness to listen to the script opened doors for the project. As a mark of respect and gratitude, the director even credited Vijay in the film’s opening titles.

The film also stars Trisha Krishnan alongside Suriya, forming a strong on-screen pairing that has been well received by audiences.

Box office success and storyline

Karuppu has turned out to be a massive commercial success, reportedly crossing ₹300 crore at the worldwide box office. The film’s unique premise and engaging narrative have contributed to its strong run in theatres.

The story revolves around Vettai Karuppu, a guardian deity who assumes the form of a lawyer to combat corruption and injustice. The blend of mythology and contemporary themes has struck a chord with viewers.

Apart from Suriya and Trisha, the film features a supporting cast including RJ Balaji, Indrans, Anagha Maya Ravi and Natty Subramaniam.

Vijay’s transition to politics

Meanwhile, Vijay’s shift from cinema to politics continues to draw attention. Having recently been sworn in as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, he has prioritised governance over acting commitments.

His final film as an actor, Jana Nayagan, is yet to be released due to certification-related issues, marking what could be the end of his illustrious film career.

Conclusion

RJ Balaji’s meeting with Chief Minister Vijay not only reflects mutual respect but also highlights the unseen contributions that shape a film’s journey. While Vijay did not feature in Karuppu, his early involvement played a pivotal role in bringing the project to life. The film’s success stands as a testament to collaborative effort, creative evolution and the importance of constructive feedback in cinema.
