Chennai: Music composer Sai Abhyankkar has earned international recognition as the soundtrack of director Balaji Tharaneetharan’s Tamil film Baththa, starring Vijay Sethupathi, secured the eighth position on Spotify’s Top Albums Debut Global chart for October 9 to 11.

Spotify updated the chart on Wednesday, placing Baththa among the top 10 debut albums globally. The other positions featured releases by international artists, including Troye Sivan, FOLA, Pitbull and Cameron Winter, among others.

The achievement marks a significant milestone for Sai Abhyankkar, whose music has emerged as one of the talking points surrounding the film. The composer shared the Spotify chart on his Instagram Stories, acknowledging the soundtrack’s growing reach beyond its home audience.

The film’s music has received considerable appreciation from listeners, with several tracks gaining popularity. Although the soundtrack has also attracted criticism from some listeners, many have praised it as one of the notable Tamil film albums of the year.

‘Chellame Magale’ and ‘Vaazhanum Baththa’ win listeners

The Baththa soundtrack features songs such as ‘Chellame Magale’ and ‘Vaazhanum Baththa’, which have been among the tracks highlighted by listeners.

Sai Abhyankkar recently expressed gratitude for the response to the film’s music, describing the audience’s appreciation for its songs and background score as “truly overwhelming”.

The Spotify ranking reflects the album’s performance on an international platform, placing a Tamil film soundtrack alongside releases from artists across different music markets. The recognition also brings further attention to Sai Abhyankkar’s work on the project.

While chart positions can change as listening trends evolve, the album’s entry into the global top 10 provides an indication of its reach during the October 9–11 tracking period.

The soundtrack has become an important part of the film’s reception, with audiences discussing both its songs and its background score. The differing reactions to the music have not prevented the album from attracting attention, particularly following the film’s theatrical release.

‘Baththa’ continues its box-office run

The film has also maintained a presence at the box office following its release in theatres. According to the latest figures cited from box-office tracker Sacnilk, Baththa had earned approximately Rs 30 crore in India after two weeks of its theatrical run.

The film opened to positive reviews, and its reception has contributed to conversations about its story, performances and music. Its continued performance has also prompted discussions about the possibility of reaching audiences beyond Tamil-speaking regions.

Some viewers in North India have reportedly called for a Hindi-dubbed version of the film. Comparisons with the Tamil feel-good drama Meiyazhagan, known for its emotional storytelling and character-driven narrative, have also featured in discussions surrounding Baththa.

However, a Hindi-dubbed release has not been confirmed in the information available.

Vijay Sethupathi leads a story of an unexpected encounter

Directed by Balaji Tharaneetharan, Baththa features Vijay Sethupathi in the role of a feared gangster whose life takes an unexpected turn after a young boy accidentally locks him inside a school restroom.

Sai Prithvi Raj plays the young boy whose actions set the central situation in motion. The premise places the gangster in an unusual setting, allowing the film to explore the encounter between two characters from very different worlds.

The cast also includes Lijomol Jose, Ajay Ghosh, Santhy Balachandran and Arjun Chidambaram.

The film’s narrative and performances have contributed to its reception, while its music has added another dimension to its appeal. The combination of a character-led story and a soundtrack that has attracted attention on streaming platforms has helped keep the film in public discussion.

Global recognition for a Tamil film soundtrack

Sai Abhyankkar’s Baththa album securing the eighth spot on Spotify’s Top Albums Debut Global chart is a notable achievement for the film’s music team.

The ranking places the soundtrack among a diverse selection of international releases and highlights the potential for regional Indian film music to reach listeners through global streaming platforms.

With the film continuing its theatrical run and its music receiving attention online, Baththa has gained visibility across both cinema and music audiences. Whether that momentum leads to further international chart appearances or a Hindi-dubbed release remains to be seen.

For now, the Spotify ranking offers a fresh milestone for Sai Abhyankkar and adds to the growing conversation around Vijay Sethupathi’s latest film.
