Actor Saif Ali Khan has spoken candidly about nepotism in the film industry, acknowledging the advantages that star children receive while stressing that his son Ibrahim Ali Khan must build his career on his own.

Saif made the remarks during a podcast conversation with his sister, actor Soha Ali Khan, where he discussed the challenges of privilege in Bollywood and the expectations placed on actors who come from film families.

Saif acknowledges privilege in film industry

Saif, the son of veteran actor Sharmila Tagore, admitted that opportunities often come easier for people who have family connections in the entertainment industry.

He said there is a significant difference between individuals who receive early exposure due to family influence and those who struggle to find opportunities without connections.

According to Saif, audiences are often drawn to artists who rise from humble beginnings without the backing of influential mentors or famous parents.

Nepotism debate in Bollywood

The actor also described nepotism as “unfair”, particularly when individuals receive repeated opportunities despite not delivering strong performances.

He explained that audiences tend to accept privileged actors if they eventually prove their talent.

However, criticism intensifies when someone continues to receive chances despite failing to impress viewers.

Saif noted that this situation can create frustration among audiences who believe other talented performers may be missing opportunities.

Ibrahim must build his own path

Speaking about his son Ibrahim Ali Khan’s career, Saif said he supports his children but believes there should be limits to parental intervention.

He added that Ibrahim already benefits from the privilege of belonging to a well-known film family and therefore needs to establish himself independently.

“I don’t know if I should stand next to you and hold your hand at this stage because you already have so much because of who you are,” Saif said, explaining that his son must now prove himself on his own merit.

Upcoming projects

Ibrahim Ali Khan recently made his Bollywood debut with Karan Johar’s Nadaaniyan, followed by Sarzameen. However, both films received mixed responses from audiences and critics.

He is now reportedly preparing for his next project, Diler, directed by Kunal Deshmukh. The film is expected to feature actor Sreeleela as the female lead, although an official announcement is yet to be made.

Meanwhile, Saif Ali Khan has several projects in development, including the investigative drama Kartavya, which is expected to release on Netflix later this year.

He is also set to appear in director Priyadarshan’s upcoming film Haiwaan, where he will reunite with actor Akshay Kumar after nearly 17 years.
