Thalapathy Vijay’s 2018 blockbuster Sarkar may have drawn mixed early reviews, but it quickly struck a chord with the audience, raking in an impressive ₹256 crore globally. Directed by A.R. Murugadoss, the political action drama wasn’t just a box-office hit—it became the center of a major controversy.

Upon release, several AIADMK ministers and cadres took offence at specific scenes they felt were critical of the state government. Protests erupted across Tamil Nadu, with angry party members damaging banners and cutouts of Vijay and demanding scene deletions, despite the film having passed censor board scrutiny.

The aggressive backlash prompted strong responses from industry stalwarts. Superstar Rajinikanth, in a sharply worded tweet, stated:

“To protest for the removal of certain scenes from the movie and stop it from being screened after the Censor Board has certified it is against the law. I strongly condemn this act.”

Kamal Haasan, actor-turned-politician, also voiced his support for Sarkar‘s team, tweeting:

“It isn’t new for this government to act and pressurize against a film like Sarkar, which has completed its censor formalities properly… Commercialized politicians will soon vanish, and the good people will win.”

In Sarkar, Vijay plays an NRI who returns to cast his vote, only to discover it has been fraudulently cast, prompting him to challenge systemic corruption.

Now, with Vijay’s latest hit Greatest of All Time (2024) behind him, fans are eagerly awaiting Jana Nayagan, directed by H. Vinoth, set for release on January 9, 2026—especially as Vijay eyes a real-life political debut post-film.
