New Delhi: Veteran actor Shekhar Suman has shared a heartwarming anecdote about his association with superstar Shah Rukh Khan during the making of the 2003 film Chalte Chalte. The actor revealed how he declined a “huge cheque” offered by Shah Rukh Khan for a voiceover contribution, only to receive a thoughtful and expensive watch as a token of appreciation later.

The story offers a glimpse into the camaraderie and mutual respect shared between artists in the film industry.

Voiceover for Chalte Chalte teaser

Recalling the incident, Shekhar Suman said that Shah Rukh Khan had personally reached out to him for lending his voice to the promotional teaser of Chalte Chalte. The film, which starred Shah Rukh Khan alongside Rani Mukerji, was one of the notable romantic dramas of its time.

Suman shared that he readily agreed to the request and completed the voiceover without any hesitation.

“He called me directly and asked if I could do the commentary for the teaser. I said yes and went ahead with it,” he said, highlighting the ease and warmth of their interaction.

Refusal of payment and SRK’s gesture

After completing the work, Shekhar Suman revealed that Shah Rukh Khan sent him a substantial cheque as payment. However, the actor chose to decline it, stating that the gesture was purely out of friendship and not for financial gain.

“I told him this is between two friends and not about money,” Suman recalled.

Despite his refusal, Shah Rukh Khan found another way to express his gratitude. According to Suman, the actor later sent him a luxurious watch, which he continues to cherish as a meaningful memento.

“Shah Rukh being Shah Rukh, he sent me a very expensive watch the next time, which I still have. It’s a beautiful memory,” he added.

Missed opportunity in Devdas

In the same conversation, Shekhar Suman also spoke about a missed opportunity in his career involving filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali. He revealed that he was initially offered the role of Chunnilal in Devdas.

However, due to circumstances at the time, he could not take up the role, which was later portrayed by Jackie Shroff. Suman admitted that he regretted missing the chance to work with Bhansali and Shah Rukh Khan on the project.

He noted that while the regret stayed with him for years, he eventually got an opportunity to collaborate with Bhansali in the filmmaker’s recent project Heeramandi.

A diverse career across television and films

Shekhar Suman has had a long and versatile career in the entertainment industry as an actor, anchor and producer. He gained widespread popularity with the iconic television show Dekh Bhai Dekh, which remains a fan favourite even today.

Over the years, he has also been part of several television programmes, including Wah! Janaab, Reporter, Simply Shekhar and Carry On Shekhar, showcasing his range as a performer and host.

His recent appearance in Heeramandi marked a significant milestone, as it fulfilled his long-standing wish to work with Sanjay Leela Bhansali.
