Chennai: The much-anticipated eight-minute promo of director Vetri Maaran’s upcoming film Arasan, starring Silambarasan TR, popularly known as Simbu, may arrive in theatres on December 4. The promotional video was initially expected to release during Diwali, but pending work on composer Anirudh Ravichander‘s background score has reportedly delayed its launch.
According to a source close to the film team who spoke to India Today Digital, the makers are now considering December 4 for the theatrical debut. The date is yet to be officially confirmed, and the team has not announced a revised release schedule.
The promo is expected to offer audiences an extended introduction to the film’s world, characters and storyline. Its proposed theatrical release is also reportedly being planned on a much larger scale than the original Diwali rollout.
Anirudh’s background score holds up promo release
The dubbing work for the eight-minute promo has reportedly been completed by the principal cast members. Silambarasan, Priyanka Mohan, Andrea Jeremiah, Samuthirakani and Kishore have finished their portions.
Director Vetri Maaran has also completed his voice-over for the promotional video. His narration is expected to introduce the story and establish its connection with the Vada Chennai universe.
With these components completed, the background score by Anirudh Ravichander is reportedly the only major pending element.
The team has been waiting for the composer to finish the score over the past week. The music is considered an important part of the promo’s presentation, particularly because the makers want the theatrical version to deliver the intended cinematic impact.
The original plan was to release the promo during Diwali. However, the delay in completing the background score reportedly made it difficult to meet that schedule.
Anirudh’s other commitments have also been taken into consideration. With his wedding scheduled for November, the makers are said to be mindful of his personal and professional commitments and have chosen not to put additional pressure on him.
Vetri Maaran and Simbu prefer original music
There was reportedly a suggestion from producer Kalaipuli S Thanu to use the background score from an earlier promo and proceed with the planned release.
However, Vetri Maaran and Silambarasan are said to have preferred waiting for Anirudh’s original composition instead.
The reported decision reflects their preference for presenting the promotional video with a score created specifically for it rather than relying on previously used music.
For an extended theatrical promo, the background score can play an important role in establishing the mood, building tension and introducing the characters. The makers are reportedly keen to ensure that the music complements the visuals and narration.
While the earlier score could have allowed the team to meet the Diwali timeline, waiting for Anirudh’s work appears to have become the preferred option.
The December 4 date is now being considered as an alternative. However, until the makers issue an official announcement, the revised schedule remains a reported plan rather than a confirmed release date.
Arasan promo may reach more than 1,000 theatres
The proposed December 4 release could also mark a significant expansion in the theatrical rollout.
According to the source, the makers are considering screening the eight-minute promo in more than 1,000 theatres, including overseas locations.
This would be a considerable increase from the original plan, which reportedly involved releasing it in more than 100 screens during Diwali.
The larger rollout could help the film reach audiences beyond Tamil Nadu and generate wider interest in the project. Screening the promo in theatres would also give viewers an opportunity to experience its visuals and background score on the big screen.
The proposed date coincides with the theatrical release of Train. The makers are reportedly considering using the same release window for the Arasan promotional video.
However, the number of participating theatres and the overseas screening arrangements have not been officially confirmed. The final scale of the release will depend on the announcement from the production team.
The reported expansion suggests that the makers are considering the promo as a major promotional event rather than a conventional online teaser or trailer release.
Arasan connects to the Vada Chennai universe
Arasan marks the first collaboration between Vetri Maaran and Silambarasan TR. The film is set in the world of Vada Chennai, the filmmaker’s acclaimed crime drama.
The connection has been one of the key talking points surrounding the project. The voice-over completed by Vetri Maaran is reportedly intended to introduce the story while establishing its place within the larger Vada Chennai universe.
The film features Priyanka Mohan, Andrea Jeremiah, Samuthirakani and Kishore in important roles alongside Silambarasan.
Vetri Maaran is known for films that explore layered characters and gritty narratives. His collaboration with Silambarasan has therefore generated considerable anticipation among Tamil cinema audiences.
The association with Vada Chennai has added another dimension to that interest, particularly among viewers familiar with the earlier film’s setting and characters.
The eight-minute promo is expected to provide a more substantial glimpse of the project than a conventional short teaser. Its extended duration could allow the director to establish the atmosphere and introduce the film’s central world in greater detail.
Fans await official announcement from the makers
The reported postponement has pushed the promotional plans beyond Diwali, but the team appears to be prioritising the completion of Anirudh’s original background score.
The possible December 4 launch, along with the proposed screening in more than 1,000 theatres, could give Arasan a wider promotional platform. The involvement of Vetri Maaran, Silambarasan and Anirudh has already made the project one of the closely watched upcoming Tamil films.
For now, both the revised date and the scale of the theatrical rollout remain unconfirmed. The makers are yet to announce whether the promo will release on December 4 or provide details of the theatres where it may be screened.
If the reported plans materialise, audiences could get their first extended theatrical look at Arasan in early December, with the film’s connection to the Vada Chennai universe forming a central part of its appeal.
