Mumbai: Comedian Sunil Pal has addressed the online backlash surrounding his on-screen banter with Samay Raina on The Great Indian Kapil Show, clarifying that there is no bad blood between them.

The episode, hosted by Kapil Sharma, drew mixed reactions after some viewers felt that Sunil was being mocked excessively during the exchange.

‘It’s part of comedy’

Responding to the criticism, Sunil dismissed the controversy, saying the banter was in line with the nature of comedy shows.

“I don’t consider it humiliation because it’s a comedy show. Taang khichayi (leg-pulling) happens all the time. We both made jokes on each other.”

He emphasised that such exchanges are common in the genre and should not be taken seriously.

No awkwardness behind the scenes

Sunil also clarified that there was no discomfort off-camera. He revealed that he was aware of Samay’s presence on the show beforehand and everything was cordial during filming.

The laughter from judges like Navjot Singh Sidhu and Archana Puran Singh further reflected the light-hearted tone of the segment.

‘Difference of opinion, not personal’

While denying any personal conflict, Sunil acknowledged that he does have differing views on the style of comedy adopted by many younger performers.

“I don’t have a personal beef with anyone. It’s just a difference in opinion.”

He expressed concern over the increasing use of profanity in stand-up comedy, urging newer comedians to focus on more refined content.

Advocate for clean humour

Sunil reiterated his long-standing preference for clean comedy, saying audiences deserve better-quality humour.

“Good content should reach the audience. Too often it comes back to abuses, and that hurts me.”

He encouraged younger comics to make better use of the resources and exposure available to them today.

Professional rapport remains intact

Despite differing comedic philosophies, Sunil and Samay have maintained a professional relationship. The duo even collaborated earlier this year on a commercial project, underlining that their equation remains friendly.

The episode may have sparked debate online, but Sunil’s response makes one thing clear — what viewers saw was performance, not personal conflict.
