Chennai: A public interest litigation (PIL) has been filed in the Madras High Court seeking to stall the release of the Tamil political thriller TN 2026 until after the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, citing concerns that the film could influence voters.

The petition, filed by ML Ravi, president of Desiya Makkal Sakthi Katchi, argues that the film contains political content that may affect the fairness of the electoral process. The plea also draws comparisons with Jana Nayagan, the last film of actor-turned-politician Vijay, which, according to the petitioner, has not been released due to its political undertones amid the election season.

Petition raises concerns over electoral influence

In his affidavit, Ravi contended that allowing TN 2026 to release during the election period would violate the mandate of the Election Commission of India to ensure free and fair elections. He urged the court to direct the Tamil Nadu Chief Electoral Officer to prevent the film’s release, both in theatres and on OTT platforms, until polling concludes.

The petitioner cited Article 324 of the Constitution, which empowers the Election Commission to oversee elections, and Article 14, which guarantees equality before the law. He alleged that the authorities’ inaction in this case amounts to selective enforcement, especially when compared to the handling of Jana Nayagan.

According to the plea, releasing a politically themed film close to polling dates could disrupt the level playing field and potentially influence voter perception.

What is TN 2026 about?

The controversy intensified after the teaser of TN 2026, produced by Kannan Ravi and co-produced by Deepak Ravi, was released on YouTube on April 2. The film is scheduled for release on April 10, just weeks before Tamil Nadu goes to polls on April 23.

The teaser portrays a leading film star who transitions into politics, transforming his fan base into a mass political movement and aspiring to become Chief Minister. Several viewers on social media pointed out similarities between the storyline and the political journey of Vijay, who recently launched his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam.

However, the filmmakers have not officially confirmed any such connection.

Filmmakers deny political targeting

Actor and writer Thambi Ramaiah addressed the controversy at a press conference in Chennai, clarifying that the film does not target Vijay or any specific individual.

He stated that TN 2026 is not a spoof but a fictional narrative about a popular actor entering politics after achieving fame and wealth. He also emphasised that the story was conceptualised over a year ago and is not based on recent political developments.

The film is directed by Umapathy Ramaiah and features Natarajan Subramanian in the lead role, with supporting performances by MS Bhaskar, Shrita Rao and Ilavarasu.

Legal and political implications

The case highlights the growing intersection of cinema and politics in Tamil Nadu, where film personalities have historically played significant roles in shaping political narratives.

Legal experts note that while films are subject to certification by the Central Board of Film Certification, election authorities may intervene if content is deemed capable of influencing voters during the model code of conduct period.

The court is expected to examine whether the film’s release violates election norms or constitutes a form of indirect political messaging.

Conclusion

As the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections approach, the petition has sparked a broader debate on the role of cinema in political discourse and electoral fairness. While the filmmakers maintain that TN 2026 is purely fictional, the court’s decision could set a precedent on how politically themed films are regulated during election periods.
