Malayalam cinema’s beloved veteran Janardhanan, known for his remarkable versatility as a comedian, villain, and character actor, has made a rare personal revelation in a recent interview. Speaking candidly on a YouTube talk show, the actor reflected on a difficult chapter from his past — a relationship outside his marriage that he now deeply regrets.

“I had a relationship with another woman”

In the heartfelt conversation, Janardhanan said, “Most of the decisions I’ve made in my life were right, but one I took 18 years ago turned out to be wrong. I had a relationship with another woman, and my wife knew about it. I did everything I could for that woman, but after a few years, she grew tired of the situation and decided to end it.”

The 77-year-old actor, who has appeared in over 700 films across his illustrious career, admitted that the incident remains a personal regret. Despite the emotional turmoil, he credited his wife for her strength and grace during the period.

A marriage that defied family opposition

Opening up about his marriage, Janardhanan shared that he and his wife tied the knot despite opposition from their families. “She was beautiful, well-educated, and came from a strong background. We led a good life together,” he said with visible emotion.

His remarks have resonated with audiences, with many appreciating his honesty and willingness to confront a painful part of his life publicly.

Fond memories of Mammootty and Mohanlal

Shifting to lighter moments, Janardhanan spoke warmly about his long-time colleagues and friends, Mammootty and Mohanlal, both of whom he has shared the screen with for over four decades.

“They have done countless acts of kindness that the public doesn’t know about. They treat me like their own brother,” he said, recalling how Mammootty recently helped fund the surgery of a child under 14 years old.

He also fondly reminisced about Mohanlal’s early years in the film industry. “He was very handsome when he was young. Everyone used to call him ‘Poovan Pazham’— even though he doesn’t know I used to call him that,” Janardhanan laughed, adding a nostalgic touch to the conversation.

From the Air Force to Malayalam cinema

Before achieving stardom, Janardhanan served in the Indian Air Force, a fact not widely known to younger audiences. After completing his service, he followed his passion for acting, debuting in Malayalam cinema in the late 1960s. His ability to seamlessly transition between comedy, villainy, and serious character roles made him one of the most dependable actors in the industry.

He went on to become a regular fixture in Malayalam films of the 1980s and 1990s, working with some of the biggest names in the industry including directors like Sathyan Anthikad, Priyadarshan, and Fazil.

Still active in cinema

Even after six decades in the industry, Janardhanan continues to stay active in Malayalam cinema. He was most recently seen in ‘Hridayapoorvam’, a family drama directed by Sathyan Anthikad and starring Mohanlal in the lead role. The film, which released earlier this year, became a superhit, with critics praising Janardhanan’s heartwarming performance.

Fans across social media have hailed the actor not just for his screen presence but also for his humility and honesty in addressing his past. Many have called the interview a reflection of a man unafraid to accept his flaws and share his life lessons.

A legacy of laughter and wisdom

Janardhanan’s career stands as a testament to his enduring appeal and adaptability. From his comic brilliance in Godfather and Mannar Mathai Speaking to memorable supporting roles in CID Moosa and Rasathanthram, his performances continue to entertain generations.

As the actor continues to work in select projects, he remains one of the most respected figures in the Malayalam film fraternity — not only for his talent but also for his candour and integrity.
