Chennai: Vignesh Shivan has addressed claims of being overshadowed by his wife Nayanthara, stating that such perceptions have no place in a healthy relationship.
The director-lyricist, who is awaiting the release of Love Insurance Kompany, opened up about his personal and professional life during a recent interaction, emphasising that love and mutual respect define their bond rather than comparisons.
‘No place for ego in relationships’Responding to remarks that he is often recognised as Nayanthara’s husband, Vignesh dismissed the idea of feeling overshadowed.
“There is nothing of that sort. When we think like that, we can’t move forward in life. In relationships like father-son, brothers, and husband and wife, there is no concept of ‘overshadowing’,” he said.
He stressed that strong relationships are built on support rather than competition, adding that such comparisons only create unnecessary negativity.
A light-hearted moment that stood out
Vignesh also shared a personal anecdote that reflected his perspective. He recalled stopping at a roadside juice stall without carrying any payment options, only to be recognised by the shopkeeper through Nayanthara.
The shopkeeper reportedly let him go without payment after recognising him, a gesture that amused the filmmaker.
“I called up Nayan and told her that she saved me that day,” he said, describing the moment with humour.
Recognition brings joy, not discomfort
The filmmaker said that being identified through his wife or family gives him happiness rather than discomfort.
“When people refer to me as Uyir and Ulag’s father, it feels beautiful. It’s the same happiness when I’m recognised by my wife’s name. There is no jealousy or ego. It comes purely from love,” he added.
Relationship journey
Vignesh Shivan and Nayanthara began their relationship after working together on Naanum Rowdy Dhaan in 2015. The couple got engaged in 2021 and married in 2022.
They later welcomed twin boys through surrogacy, further strengthening their personal journey together.
Upcoming project
On the professional front, Vignesh is preparing for the release of Love Insurance Kompany, a sci-fi romantic entertainer featuring Pradeep Ranganathan, Krithi Shetty and SJ Suryah in lead roles.
The film also marks his reunion with composer Anirudh Ravichander.
Conclusion
Vignesh Shivan’s remarks underline a grounded perspective on relationships in the public eye, where mutual respect outweighs notions of comparison. His response reflects a broader message that personal bonds thrive on support, not competition.
