Chengalpattu: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and actor Vijay’s ongoing divorce proceedings with wife Sangeetha Sornalingam have been adjourned to August 7 after a hearing at the Chengalpattu Mahila Court on June 15. Despite both parties appearing in person before the court, the matter did not move towards a settlement, and further proceedings will now continue in August.

The case has attracted significant public attention due to Vijay’s prominence in Tamil cinema and his recent entry into politics, culminating in his election as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.

Both parties appear before court

According to reports, Vijay and Sangeetha appeared before the family court following earlier directions requiring their physical presence. The court had previously rejected requests from both parties seeking permission to attend the hearing virtually.

The hearing commenced in the morning and continued in the presence of both sides. However, no breakthrough or settlement was reached during the proceedings.

After hearing submissions from both parties, the court decided to adjourn the matter to August 7 for further consideration.

Allegations raised in divorce petition

Sangeetha Sornalingam has reportedly sought dissolution of the marriage under the Special Marriage Act, citing multiple grounds, including allegations of infidelity and cruelty.

According to reports, the petition claims that she became aware in 2021 of Vijay’s alleged relationship with another actress. While the court filing reportedly does not identify any individual by name, the allegations form a key part of her petition.

The filing further states that she initially believed the alleged relationship would end following assurances but later felt that the situation continued, causing emotional distress and embarrassment to both her and their children.

Claims of marital breakdown

The petition reportedly outlines a gradual deterioration of the marriage over the years. It alleges growing emotional distance, lack of communication and an increasingly strained domestic environment.

Sangeetha has also claimed that Vijay’s professional commitments and political responsibilities took precedence over family life, leaving her feeling isolated.

The petition further mentions alleged financial restrictions and other issues that, according to her, contributed to the irretrievable breakdown of the marriage.

Vijay and Sangeetha’s relationship

Vijay and Sangeetha were married in 1999 and have been regarded as one of the most recognised couples in the South Indian entertainment industry.

Their relationship reportedly began after Sangeetha, who was living abroad at the time, became a fan of Vijay’s work and later met the actor.

The couple have two children, son Jason Sanjay and daughter Divya Sasha.

Next hearing in August

With no resolution emerging from the latest court appearance, the case will now be taken up again on August 7. Legal observers expect further arguments and submissions from both sides as the proceedings continue.

The outcome of the case remains closely watched due to Vijay’s high-profile public status and growing political influence in Tamil Nadu.
