Vijay Sethupathi's Maharaja Takes The Chinese Box Office By Storm

Vijay Sethupathi’s critically acclaimed Tamil thriller Maharaja is making waves at the Chinese box office, with early previews already setting impressive records. The film, which has garnered a massive 19.7 million views on Netflix, is now building on that success with its preview screenings in China. The suspense thriller is making its official debut on November 29, releasing on a vast 40,000 screens across the country, ensuring widespread attention.

Even before its official release, Maharaja has already grossed a significant $500,000 through its preview screenings. In Chinese Yuan, this amounts to ¥36,23,149, an impressive figure considering the movie’s limited release. This early success has exceeded expectations, especially when compared to the performance of other Indian films in China. For example, Baahubali: The Conclusion earned almost $10 million in China, and Maharaja has already collected 4.7% of that total.

With the film’s momentum growing, many are predicting that Maharaja could replicate the success of other major Indian films in the Chinese market. Directed by Nithilan Saminathan, the film features Vijay Sethupathi in the role of a barber from Chennai who becomes embroiled in a thrilling sequence of events after attempting to report a stolen dustbin at a police station.

Made on a budget of Rs 20 crore, Maharaja is poised to be a significant success in both India and China.
