Food, at its heart, is far more than spices and techniques — it is memory, emotion and comfort. Celebrated chef Vikas Khanna recently echoed this sentiment after being hosted for a heartfelt, home-cooked meal in Mumbai by the family of actor Priyanka Chopra.

During his visit, Khanna was invited to lunch by Priyanka Chopra’s brother Siddharth Chopra, his wife Neelam, and Priyanka’s mother Madhu Chopra. What followed, the chef shared, was one of the most memorable meals he has had in a long time.

A meal cooked with love

Taking to social media, Khanna expressed gratitude to Madhu Chopra for hosting him and praised Siddharth Chopra for stepping into the kitchen. He mentioned that Siddharth had promised to cook for him “when he visited with the amazing Neelam,” and the promise was clearly fulfilled with warmth and generosity.

The chef described the experience as deeply nostalgic, filled with flavours that transported him back to his childhood — a reminder that even the world’s finest chefs are moved most by ghar ka khana.

Dishes that stirred memories

Sharing details of the menu, Khanna wrote about tasting gajar ka halwa that felt exactly like his Biji’s version — a dish that, in his words, “doesn’t just feed you, it returns you to your childhood.”

He went on to describe the dal bukhara as “a healing hug from an elder in the family,” while the kharode curry reminded him of the warmth and depth of Kolkata’s nalli kosha. The makki roti, he said, was softer than any he had eaten on Punjab highways during winter, and the five greens saag left him too emotional to even put into words.

Even the accompaniments — homemade chaat masala and pickled onions — carried the comfort of familiar flavours and family traditions.

More than a meal

For Chef Khanna, the experience was not about technique or presentation, but about love, memory and connection. His reflections served as a gentle reminder that no Michelin star can rival the joy of a meal cooked with care at home.

Moments like these underline a simple truth: no matter how accomplished one becomes, the comfort of home-cooked food remains timeless and irreplaceable.
