Mumbai: Filmmaker Vipul Amrutlal Shah has said that the themes explored in his upcoming film Governor closely reflect present-day economic concerns being discussed amid global uncertainty.
Shah shared his thoughts on social media after Narendra Modi recently spoke about the importance of protecting India’s economic stability and foreign exchange reserves during the ongoing West Asia crisis.
The filmmaker stated that the Prime Minister’s appeal regarding fuel conservation and cautious spending resonated strongly with the backdrop of his upcoming film.
Film inspired by 1990 Gulf War-era crisis
Speaking about the issue, Vipul Shah said the economic concerns highlighted today are similar to the circumstances India faced during the Gulf War period in 1990.
“I completely agree with the concern expressed by our honourable Prime Minister, Narendra Modi. What may seem like simple suggestions — being careful about fuel consumption or being mindful about gold purchases — are actually connected to protecting India’s economic stability and forex reserves,” Shah said.
He further explained that Governor is rooted in the economic turmoil India experienced during the early 1990s.
“The film is set in 1990, when the Gulf War shook India’s economy to such an extent that gold had to leave the country to stabilise the nation,” he added.
India had faced a severe balance-of-payments crisis during that period, forcing the government to pledge gold reserves to secure emergency financial support.
Present-day events make film feel relevant
Vipul Shah noted that the current global geopolitical tensions and fuel uncertainty have made the themes explored in the film feel increasingly relevant.
“Today, with global fuel uncertainty and geopolitical tensions once again making headlines, it almost feels surreal to see certain realities mirroring the world and concerns explored in my film,” Shah stated.
“Sometimes, patriotism is also about responsibility,” he added.
The filmmaker’s comments come at a time when rising crude oil prices and instability in West Asia have sparked concerns regarding economic pressure on several countries, including India.
Manoj Bajpayee plays RBI Governor
The film stars Manoj Bajpayee in the role of the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India.
Presented by Sunshine Pictures and backed by Vipul Shah, the project is inspired by historical events linked to one of the most difficult economic phases in independent India’s history.
Governor is directed by Chinmay Mandlekar and has already generated interest following the release of its teaser.
The screenplay has been written by Suvendu Bhattacharyjee, Saurabh Bharat, Ravi Asrani, and Vipul Amrutlal Shah.
Music for the film has been composed by Amit Trivedi, while lyrics have been penned by Javed Akhtar.
Film to release in June 2026
Governor is scheduled to release in theatres on June 12, 2026.
The film is expected to blend political drama, economic history, and patriotism while revisiting a defining period in India’s financial journey.
Industry observers believe the film’s subject matter could resonate strongly with audiences due to the renewed focus on economic resilience and responsible consumption amid current global tensions.
