Mangaluru: An inter-collegiate basketball tournament “LUKE MAXIMILLION RASQUINHA” was held at the grounds of AIMIT on October 6 and 14.
Conceptualised with the aim of fostering sports spirit among the students along with the regular academics and inculcating a healthy lifestyle among the young, the tournament had been a long cherished dream of the director as well as that of the institution. The dream took wings, thanks to the support extended by Max Rasquinha, a Mangaluru-based businessman residing in USA who has assured of supporting the event for another ten years. As a mark of gratitude, the tournament has been named after his beloved grandson master Luke Rasquinha.
As many as eight teams from across the district and Udupi participated in the tournament held on October 6 and St. Aloysius Degree college and Mangalore University emerged as the qualifiers that was held on October 14 in the presence of Max Rasquinha, who was the chief guest on the occasion.
Inaugurating the final match, Rasquinha extended his wishes to all the players. The match was a high voltage one and had onlookers on their toes as both the teams gave a tough fight with the score being equal most of the times. Finally, it was the players of St. Aloysius team who sped up their game to take control over the other team and script history by becoming the second time Champions of LUKE MAXIMILLION RASQUINHA TOURNAMENT.
At the prize distribution ceremony, Rasquinha stirred the hearts of the players by congratulating the winners while calling the others as achievers and not losers. He also said, “Sports brings people together and it helps us to exhibit our talents and our leadership skills.” He also expressed his dream of spreading the awareness about sports to the large group of students by inviting them for this kind of sports events from all over the state. This thought provoking message indeed enthused them to try evermore diligently in the future matches. The principal invited them to keep up the spirit of sports citing that it lead to greater opportunities and skill development.
Finally the director called on the students to imbibe the spirit of hard work and team work to reach their goals in life. “The sport should be a means of creating a healthy and collaborative society”, he said.
