Mangaluru: The Department of Civil Engineering at St Joseph Engineering College (SJEC), organized its First International Conference under the banner of Novel Sustainable Concepts and Technologies in Civil Engineering to be held on Sept. 23-25 for 3 days. The conference was organized in association with IOP Conference Series – Earth and Environmental Sciences as Publishing Partner. 

The International Conference was inaugurated by the Chief Guest Professor K V L Subramanyam, Professor, Department of Civil Engineering, IIT Hyderabad and Guests of honour Professor Lakshman Nandagiri, Professor, NITK Surathkal, Er. Vijaya Vishnu Mayya, Secretary General – ACCE (I) on Sept. 23 in the august presence of Rev. Fr Alwyn Richard D’Souza, Assistant Director of SJEC and Dr Rio D’Souza, Principal of SJEC. Dr Yajnheswaran B, Head of Civil Engineering & Dr ESTR Chandrasekhar B, Convener of the programme were also present.

Dr Yajnheswaran B welcomed the gathering and presented a brief report about the achievements of the Department of Civil Engineering.

Delivering the inaugural address, Professor K V L Subramanyam briefed about the need for Sustainable concepts in Civil Engineering as infrastructure plays an important role in the backbone of the economy of the country. He requested the delegates to take an active part in the proceedings and go back enriched. Professor Lakshman Nandagiri highlighted the importance of the sustainability of the structures & their impact on the environment.

Er Vijaya Vishnu Mayya mentioned about Innovative technologies in Infrastructure as the biggest use of Civil Engineering.

Dr Rio D’Souza spoke about the Practical Implementations of Sustainable Concepts and other Technological Implementations at St. Joseph Engineering College which has set up some standard benchmarks in the region.

In his presidential address, Rev. Fr Alwyn Richard D’Souza put forward the challenges posed by emerging technologies and the need to identify technological interventions to address these issues. He also addressed the idea of NEP 2020 which encourages Institutions to come up with multidisciplinary sustainable solutions to cater for the needs of society. He wished all the participants a happy time at SJEC.

Dr ESTR Chandrasekhar B offered the vote of thanks.

Apart from exciting pre-conference workshops, the conference is scheduled to witness 48 papers presented across all fields.
