FMMCH holds its first Chronic Pain Management CME and live demo

Mangaluru: The department of Anaesthesiology and Pain Medicine, Father Muller Medical College Hospital, organized it’s maiden “Chronic Pain Management CME & Live demonstration”, on Oct. 30, 2022. The event was conducted in the Conference Hall. There were around 100 members participating in the event which included delegates, resource persons and students. Sessions included: talks on various types of chronic pain management, available treatment modalities and live demonstrations of the procedures on patients for the first time ever!

As an informal inaugural ceremony, we had the lighting of the lamp by various dignitaries Rev. Fr Jeevan Sequeria Asst Administrator FMMCH, Dr Antony Sylvan D’Souza, Dean, Dr Kishan Shetty, HOD of Dept. of Anaesthesiology, Prof. Dr Radesh Hegde, honourable speakers Dr Ananth Prasad and Dr Anagha, organizing secretary, Dr Ananth Somayaji, Organising Treasurer Dr Pooja S. Further, guest speakers were welcomed with presenting of the Plant Saplings.

We also conducted a felicitation program for four senior OT staff during this event. The staff were felicitated by Rev. Fr Jeevan Sequeria, Asst. Administrator, Dr Antony Sylvan D’Souza, Dean, along with, Dr Kishan Shetty, Professor & HOD, Dr Radesh Hegde, Professor and Dr Lulu Sherif, Professor with shawl and cash as a token of our gratitude.

In the first session, we had Dr Ananth Prasad, a young and dynamic, pain specialist from Yenepoya Medical College, the awardee of Young Pain physician of Karnataka in 2016. He enlightened us about what is pain and the importance of treating chronic pain with his fantastic presentation including the actual videos from his patients. Following his session, he was presented with a memento by our Dean.

For the second session, we had an eminent speaker from Rajarajeshwari Medical College, Bangalore, Dr Anagha who spoke on the causes and types of knee pain and various available treatments for the same. He was then felicitated by Dr Mahabala. Following this Anirban … spoke a few words about the RF machinery and different modalities of nerve ablation.

It was proud moment for Fr Muller to have our third speaker, who is our own alumni, Dr Nita, now a pain physician at KMC Manipal. She shared her knowledge of pharmacological treatment for chronic Pain. She was felicitated by Dr Gururaj Tanthry.

Following these talks we then had Dr Anagha, perform a live demonstration of two procedures on patients from the OT which was telecasted live to the conference hall directly for the first time. The first procedure was transforaminal epidural steroid for low back pain. The second demonstration was a celiac plexus block for a cancer patient who was in severe abdominal pain. Both demonstrations were fantastic and the results were impeccable. The audience was highly impressed and satisfied with the quality of the demonstration. Patients expressed gratitude and extreme satisfaction with the immediate relief provided.

We then had a lunch break, following which there was a last but not the least topic of the day – PRP by Dr Anagha. The most simple but efficient mode of treatment for Chronic pain. After this talk, there was a demonstration of the most recent advance in pain – RF ablation.

The final session was a live Cadaveric demonstration of various types of blocks like SI Joint, Facet Joint, and Knee Joint…. which was set up in the U1 ward. Meanwhile, during the preparation for this demonstration, we conducted A Short Quiz On Pain for the audience.

Dr Ananth Somayaji in his vote of thanks, thanked his team led by Dr Pooja S. for the successful completion of the CME along with various other team members. We then concluded the CME with a high tea.

It was an unforgettable, enlightening CME with a live demonstration of Chronic Pain Management!
