Mangaluru: The Department of Civil Engineering at the National Institute of Technology Karnataka Surathkal is hosting a two-day International Conference on “Sustainable Infrastructure: Innovations, Opportunities and Challenges (SIIOC 2023)” as a part of G20 & C20, on April 20-21, 2023. The official inauguration of the international conference-SIIOC 2023 was held today at NITK Surathkal. More than 300 participants will present papers in hybrid mode. Policymakers, Administrators, Practitioners, industrialists, scientists, researchers, academics, and students from all over the world are among the paper presenters.

The chief guest for today’s inaugural ceremony was Prof. N. Vinod Chandra Menon, International Coordinator G20 C20 WG on Sustainable & Resilient Communities, and, Prof. Darren Chian Siau Chen, Associate Professor, National University of Singapore was the Guest of Honour. Prof. Prasad Krishna, Director (Additional-charge) NITK Surathkal was the Chief Patron, and Prof. B. R. Jayalekshmi, HOD Civil Department, NITK was the Patron for today’s international conference.

The dignitaries felicitated Prof. A.U. Ravi Shankar and Prof. K. Swaminathan from the Civil Engineering Department, NITK Surathkal for their enormous contributions in the field of civil engineering.

The conference provides a platform for deliberations on developing solutions that mitigate the impact of infrastructure on ecology and the environment. Research and case studies on challenges, underlying opportunities and innovative ideas for the development of sustainable infrastructure will be presented and discussed.

The conference is focused on themes such as Seismic resilient infrastructure, climate action, innovations in a composite structure, low carbon building technologies and affordable housing, utilization of industrial wastes for constructions, design and constructions for green highways, urban transport and traffic management, challenges for soil improvement and ground stabilization, solid waste management, Dam engineering, disaster risk reduction, transportation geotechnics, earthquakes and landslides, retrofitting and rehabilitation, smart growth etc.
The chief guest Prof. N. Vinod Chandra Menon while addressed the gathering and said “

This international conference as part of G20 & C20 is vital, as we are aware of India’s presidency in G20, 85 per cent of global GDP, 75 per cent of global trade, two-thirds of the world’s population is involved in G20, approximately one trillion dollars are invested in infrastructure, but the life of these buildings is not sustainable in many developing countries, disasters and destruction damage rates are high, especially for bridges and flyovers. Therefore, Engineers should consider embracing sustainability, and sustainable practices should be implemented. The recommendations from the SIIOC2023 international conference will be conveyed to the G20 summit and presented to the heads of the Government of India in Delhi, as well as to the C20 (Civil 20)”.

“It’s a great moment while India is chairing G20, several meetings, awareness programmes, seminars, workshops, and events are held nationwide and globally, but we must understand that sustainability is everyone’s commitment to contribute to a sustainable ecosystem,” said Prof. Prasad Krishna. “Humans must cultivate compassion, impart humanity, and learn to live and let live. Although Indian culture and traditions have always taught us to protect the environment and coexist peacefully with all living things, we are finding it more and harder to uphold these values. In order to live together with the natural world, humans need to raise their consciousness quotient” he added.

Dr Raviraj H.M. and Dr Pavan, assistant professors from the Civil Engineering Department, NITK Surathkal, are the organising chairs of the international conference SIIOC-2023.
