Mangaluru: St Aloysius Pre-University College conducted an insightful session on adolescent health and well-being in the Loyola Hall. Dr Keshav Pai K, Professor and Head of the Department of Psychiatry, KMC Mangalore, Manipal Academy of Higher Education, was the resource person for the session.

During his engaging presentation, Dr Keshav Pai K delved into the critical nuances of the transitional phase of adolescence. He accentuated the array of challenges and opportunities inherent in this stage of life, offering insightful strategies to bolster the overall well-being of adolescents. The emphasis was on fostering holistic development by addressing various dimensions.

Dr Keshav highlighted the paramount importance of maintaining a balanced and nutrient-rich diet, along with regular physical activity and proper sleep patterns, to ensure optimal physical health. Moreover, he dedicated a significant portion of his talk to address the emotional challenges frequently encountered by adolescents. He underscored the growing prevalence of mental health concerns, particularly anxiety and depression, offering guidance on identifying distress signals and fostering open dialogues to address these issues constructively. The speaker also addressed the crucial aspect of social development among adolescents, including building healthy relationships and managing peer pressure.

Dr Keshav underscored the significance of a comprehensive approach to sexual health education, advocating for candid conversations among adults to facilitate informed decision-making.

Of particular concern were the diverse forms of addiction afflicting adolescents, encompassing substance abuse, gaming dependency, and excessive social media engagement. Dr Keshav elucidated the detrimental impacts of these addictive behaviors on physical well-being, mental equilibrium, and social interactions. In response, he championed the cultivation of healthy coping mechanisms such as sports, creative pursuits, and mindfulness practices as effective strategies to manage stress and emotions without resorting to destructive habits.
