St Thomas Aided Higher Primary School celebrates Centenary On Feb 19

Moodabidri: The Centenary Celebrations of St. Thomas Aided Higher Primary School, Alangar will be held on February 19th in a grand manner, presided by Most Rev. Dr Peter Paul D’souza, Bishop of Catholic Diocese of Mangalore, said the School Correspondent Fr. Walter D’souza during a press conference held on Thursday. In view of completing one hundred years of worthy contribution to the education of the nation, the celebration will be held in a meaningful way, with numerous developmental programmes and projects, he said. 

One crore project

As part of the Centenary celebration, renovation of school roofing at a cost of Rs. 10 lakhs, Rs. 40 Lakhs for Honorary Teacher Fund towards salary for staff assistants of the aided school, Rs. 10 lakhs for Poor Students Fund towards helping talented poor students to pursue higher education, Rs. 10 Lakhs for construction of Centenary Playground, Rs. 10 lakhs for Poor Students Basic Infrastructure Fund for providing assistance to minimum two students, construction of a Centenary Memorial Open Air Stage at a cost of Rs. 10 lakh, Installation of interlock paving on the school’s approach road at a cost of Rs. 10 lakh are some of the projects being implemented with the generous support provided by donors and well-wishers. 

100 Worthy years

St. Thomas School was established in 1921 as a result of the persistent efforts of Rev. Fr. Faustin Courti. In 1929 Rev. Fr. Elias D’souza became the correspondent of the school and spearheaded the institution on the path of progress. In 1952 the school was elevated to St. Thomas Higher Primary School. The school has been undertaking the noble task of providing education and shaping the future of the young children of Alangar and neighbouring areas for the past 100 years. Children who have studied in this school have reached great heights and become an asset to society by serving in prestigious positions like Supreme Court judge, religious and community leaders, Bishop, successful entrepreneurs, advocates, doctors and agriculturists. They have brought glory to the school by being recognized at the state, national and international levels. Thus the St. Thomas Kannada Medium Aided Higher Primary School has completed 100 worthy years by fulfilling the thirst for knowledge of the aspiring students. The school presently has 143 students on its rolls. The school managing committee, students, staff and old students are striving day and night to make this centenary celebration an unforgettable occasion. 

Centenary Programme

Stage programme will be held in the morning on February 19th as part of the centenary celebration. An old student of the school and presently the Bishop of Shimoga Diocese Most Rev. Dr Francis Serrao, SJ and another alumnus, Supreme Court Justice S. Abdul Nazeer will participate as Chief Guests. MLA Umanath Kotian, former minister K. Abhayachandra Jain, Chairman of Christian Development Board Joylus D’souza, Municipal Chairman Prasad Kumar, Secretary of Catholic Board of Education Rev. Fr. Antony Shera, Chief Catholic Parish Priest of Moodabidri circle Fr. Paul Sequeira, Eshwar Bhat, the head priest of Alangar Badaga Mahalingeshwar Temple, Education Officer of Moodabidri region Devaraju, Vice President of Adani Group Kishore Alva, Irene Menezes, Pricilla D’Mello, Lizzie Chako, Entrepreneurs Abdul Rawoof and K. M. Shetty will participate as the guests of honour. The programme will begin with Prayer at 9:30 a.m.

Convener of Centenary Celebrations Committee P. K. Thomas, Headmistress of Kannada Medium School Helen Goveas, Headmistress of English Medium School Sylvia D’sa, and Rajesh D’souza, Mabel Lobo, Lawrence D’cunha, Elias Fernandes of the Centenary Celebrations Committee were present at the press conference.
