With healthy food receiving much attention amongst the recent years, the love for fast food has, nonetheless, increased in the pandemic, given the inability to enjoy momos with that red chutney as and when one wants to. But just how reasonable is the claim that healthy food is not as tasty as junk food that we’ve resorted to? To answer this question positively, SALADrink, founded by Supraja Tallam, who is passionate about sustainable products and handcrafted goodies, brings its high fiber food and beverage menu, providing the perfect combination of taste and affordability. Operating for two years now in Bengaluru, the CEO of the company expressed about the journey with her brainchild. SALADrink is a health based food and beverage initiative which gives an opportunity to binge healthy. Supraja asserted that it was started with the efforts, inputs and creativity of 4 of her dearest friends. A Bengaluru based start-up which took birth in April, 2019, the company has gained a reliable and loyal customer base in Bengaluru.
The buds for nourishment
Bengaluru has been the hub of start-ups irrespective of different fields of ventures. However, the see-saw between fast food menus and healthy ones is timeless. SALADrink is the perfect melange of flavour so cherished from the former but with no added preservatives and the wholesome products of nature from the latter.
Speaking on the thought, Supraja explained, “even with all the awareness about sound nutritious food consumption, it remains a cliche. For too many people in India, salads are still limited to sliced onion, carrot, cucumber and tomatoes. In addition to that, all the commonly available, everyday beverages contain sugar in high levels.” In that premise, Supraja and her team’s mission is to help people taste, understand and believe that healthy, nutritious and high fiber food can be interesting, appetizing and economical. “With all the fast and fried food obsession out there, it's high time we replace at least some of that with healthy, nutritious, high fiber food,” she added.
What makes SALADrink unique?
All resources for the food and beverage company are locally sourced. Supraja disclosed that they are constantly trying to procure more of their raw materials from local vendors. With the entire menu personally crafted, SALADrink has garnered much love over the two years from South Bangalore. An authentic salad bar, it provides a variety of salads, smoothies, herbal teas and so on. “We also have a range of menu options that covers vegetarian, non-vegetarian, vegan and various dietary preferences such as gluten free, lactose free, keto friendly, dairy free etc,” she mentioned. At SALADrink, the team constantly tries to learn, grow and bring novel beneficial options to their customers. “We have monthly subscriptions, where subscribers can customise salads and beverages according to their preference and utilise it throughout the month,” Supraja informed.
Some stumbling blocks
Obstacles in any path are inevitable stops which one would cross to becomes one step closer to success. Supraja asserted that for any food start-up, sustainable and food grade packaging costs are really high.
To procure food packaging at a reasonable cost, the minimum quantity to be purchased is too large. “This makes the menu a tad expensive, and decreases the affordability to a huge section of people,” she said. Furthermore, online food aggregators charge a high commission on sales, which starts from 10% and goes upto 28%, making the menu a little pricey.
Context of the pandemic
In conversation about the effect of the pandemic on start-ups and extreme precautionary measures required, Supraja contended that as a part of the food industry, they have always taken appropriate responsibilities and hygiene protocols very seriously, not only during the pandemic, but prior to the same. “Like most of the businesses we had minor issues procuring materials and packaging during the lockdown. The resources available were marginally high priced. Having said that, I always feel lucky to be a Bangalorean for the wide access we have towards opportunities and resources being business owners,” the CEO of SALADrink said.
Speaking on how the menu from SALADrink was received, Supraja affirmed that the response was great.
“It's overwhelming to say that people from all age groups were really keen on trying our menu. We heard a lot of ‘we never thought salad can be this tasty’ for reviews,” she added.
Speaking on future endeavours, Supraja claimed, “we wish to expand our product range to healthy gourmet products and hence make them feasible and affordable to everyone.” She also aspires to start a venture that is based on recycled handcrafted sustainable furniture and home decor in future.
