New Delhi: Investors who forget to withdraw their Public Provident Fund (PPF) balance when the account reaches its 15-year maturity do not lose their savings. The money can continue to remain in the account and earn interest, subject to the applicable PPF rules.
A PPF account has a maturity period of 15 years, but the period is not calculated from the exact date on which the account was opened. Instead, the maturity is calculated from the end of the financial year in which the account was opened. For example, if an investor opens a PPF account in November 2011, the relevant financial year ends on March 31, 2012, and the 15-year period is counted from that financial year.
Once the account matures, investors can withdraw the entire balance, extend the account in five-year blocks or leave the existing balance invested under the applicable rules.
What happens if you do not withdraw the PPF balance?
Not withdrawing the PPF balance immediately after maturity does not mean the money stops earning interest.
An investor can continue to keep the existing balance in the account. If no fresh contributions are made, the balance continues to earn interest at the applicable PPF rate until the account is closed. India Post’s material also confirms that a PPF account can be extended after maturity either with or without additional contributions.
This means investors do not necessarily have to rush to close their account immediately after the 15-year maturity period.
However, the rules are different if an investor wants to continue making fresh contributions after maturity.
One-year window for fresh contributions
If the account holder wants to extend the PPF account and continue making deposits, the extension has to be opted for within the prescribed period.
According to the latest NDTV Profit report, an investor must submit Form 4 to the bank within one year from the date of maturity to continue the account with fresh contributions.
The extension is available in blocks of five years. The PPF framework allows an account holder to continue the account beyond the original 15-year period through such five-year blocks.
The option is particularly relevant for investors who want to continue contributing to their PPF and benefit from its long-term savings and tax features.
What if you miss the one-year deadline?
Missing the one-year window does not mean the existing PPF balance is lost.
If the account holder does not opt for an extension with fresh contributions within the prescribed period, fresh deposits can no longer be made under that extension.
Any deposit made after the permitted period is treated as an irregular deposit and is liable to be refunded without interest, according to the NDTV Profit report. The existing balance, however, continues to earn interest at the applicable PPF rate.
Therefore, investors should distinguish between keeping the existing corpus invested and continuing to make fresh contributions. The former can continue under the applicable rules even when the deadline for opting for further contributions has been missed.
What if the maturity date is a holiday?
There can also be situations where the maturity date falls on a weekend or a bank or public holiday.
In such cases, the withdrawal or extension process can be completed on the next working day. The account continues to earn applicable interest for the relevant period.
Importantly, the investor still has the prescribed one-year window from maturity to opt for continuation with fresh contributions. If that opportunity is not exercised, the account can continue with the existing balance but without further deposits.
PPF maturity is based on financial year
One of the most important points for PPF investors is understanding how the 15-year maturity period is calculated.
The maturity is not simply 15 years from the date printed on the account opening document. Instead, the calculation is linked to the financial year in which the initial subscription was made.
For instance, a PPF account opened in November 2011 is considered to have commenced in the financial year ending March 31, 2012. The 15-year period is consequently calculated from that financial year, with the account maturing after the prescribed period.
Investors should therefore check their account’s actual maturity date rather than calculating it solely from the date on which the first deposit was made.
How long can a PPF account be extended?
After the initial 15-year maturity period, a PPF account can be extended in blocks of five years.
The account holder has the flexibility to continue the investment with or without making additional contributions. India Post’s information confirms that even after maturity, a PPF account can be extended with or without additional contributions.
This flexibility allows investors to continue earning interest on their accumulated corpus instead of withdrawing it immediately at maturity.
For investors who choose an extension without fresh deposits, the existing balance remains invested and earns interest. Partial withdrawals can also be made during the extended period, subject to the applicable rules.
PPF remains tax-efficient
One of the major attractions of PPF is its tax treatment.
PPF is generally regarded as an EEE — Exempt, Exempt, Exempt — investment. Contributions are eligible for tax benefits under applicable provisions, interest earned is tax-free and the maturity proceeds are also exempt from tax under the applicable rules.
This tax treatment, combined with government backing and the ability to extend the account beyond 15 years, makes PPF a popular long-term savings instrument.
The maximum amount that can be deposited into a PPF account in a financial year is ₹1.5 lakh, while the minimum annual contribution is ₹500.
What should investors do after PPF maturity?
Investors approaching PPF maturity should first decide whether they need the money immediately or want to continue the investment.
Those who need the corpus can close the account and withdraw the maturity proceeds. Those who want to keep the money invested can use the five-year extension mechanism.
Investors who want to make fresh contributions should pay particular attention to the one-year deadline for opting for the extension with contributions. Missing this deadline can prevent further deposits, even though the existing corpus can continue earning interest.
The key takeaway is that forgetting to withdraw a PPF balance on the maturity date does not cause the savings to disappear. The account and its accumulated corpus remain subject to the PPF rules, giving investors an opportunity to continue earning interest or withdraw the money later.
