New Delhi: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has directed Income Tax Department officials to ensure that taxpayers do not have to “run from pillar to post” for grievance redressal or routine tax-related services. She stressed the need for a taxpayer-friendly administration, urging officials to improve efficiency, transparency and accountability while delivering public services.
The Finance Minister made the remarks during an interaction with senior Income Tax officials, where she reviewed the department’s functioning and emphasised the importance of building trust with taxpayers through prompt and hassle-free service.
Sitharaman calls for taxpayer-friendly administration
Addressing Income Tax officials, Sitharaman said the department must prioritise the convenience of ordinary taxpayers.
She asked officials to ensure that citizens are not forced to make repeated visits to tax offices or face unnecessary delays in resolving their issues. The minister stressed that grievance redressal should be timely, efficient and responsive to taxpayers’ concerns.
According to her, simplifying procedures and improving service delivery will strengthen public confidence in the tax administration.
Focus on faster grievance redressal
The Finance Minister instructed officials to resolve taxpayer grievances quickly and effectively.
She said technology should be leveraged to minimise physical interactions wherever possible while ensuring that those requiring assistance receive adequate support. Officials were also asked to remain accessible and adopt a citizen-centric approach when dealing with taxpayers.
The emphasis comes at a time when the Income Tax Department continues expanding its digital services and online compliance systems.
Improve transparency and accountability
Sitharaman also highlighted the importance of maintaining transparency in tax administration.
She urged officials to uphold the highest standards of professionalism and ensure that taxpayers receive clear communication regarding assessments, notices and grievance resolution. She added that accountability at every level would help improve the department’s overall efficiency.
Digital services remain a priority
The Finance Minister reiterated the government’s focus on digital governance and seamless taxpayer services.
The Income Tax Department has introduced several online facilities in recent years, including e-filing, faceless assessments and digital grievance mechanisms. Sitharaman encouraged officials to continue strengthening these systems while ensuring that taxpayers who need personal assistance are not left behind.
Timely message ahead of tax filing season
Her remarks come as many taxpayers continue filing their Income Tax Returns (ITRs) and seeking assistance on various compliance-related issues.
The Finance Minister’s direction is aimed at ensuring smoother taxpayer experiences during one of the busiest periods for the department and reducing inconvenience caused by procedural delays.
Conclusion
Nirmala Sitharaman’s message to Income Tax officials reinforces the government’s emphasis on citizen-centric governance and efficient public service delivery. By asking officials to ensure that taxpayers do not have to “run from pillar to post”, the Finance Minister underscored the need for quicker grievance redressal, greater transparency and a more responsive tax administration.
