Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, speaking on Monday, expressed no regret over Adani Group’s decision to exit its green energy ventures in the country. Addressing the 2025 Budget presentation, Dissanayake remarked, “We have received an offer to provide wind power at 4.65 US cents, so why should we be concerned about losing an offer at 8.26 cents?” Although he did not explicitly name Adani, his comments were aimed at the company’s recent withdrawal.

Last week, Adani Group announced it would pull out of a $400 million investment in a green energy project located in Sri Lanka’s northeastern region. Dissanayake responded to opposition claims that the government’s policies would deter potential investors, saying, “There are some who are upset, alleging that an investor has left the country.”

Adani’s exit followed a decision by the Dissanayake government in December to reassess the wind power project and renegotiate the power purchase agreement. Legal hurdles also arose, with environmental groups filing a petition in the Supreme Court, arguing that the project would endanger migratory bird populations. During his presidential campaign in September, Dissanayake had pledged to annul Adani’s projects in Sri Lanka. Additionally, Adani Group is involved in the development of the Colombo port’s western container terminal, which is nearing completion.
