New Delhi: India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) recorded its highest-ever monthly transaction volume in July 2026, reinforcing its position as the country’s dominant digital payment system. According to the latest data released by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), UPI processed 20.94 billion transactions worth ₹27.81 lakh crore during the month. While UPI continued its strong growth trajectory, FASTag transactions declined compared to the previous month.

The latest figures underline the continued expansion of digital payments across India, driven by growing smartphone adoption, wider merchant acceptance and increasing consumer preference for cashless transactions.

UPI sets new monthly record

NPCI data shows that UPI handled 20.94 billion transactions in July, the highest monthly volume recorded since the platform was launched.

The total transaction value stood at ₹27.81 lakh crore, reflecting sustained growth in digital payments across retail, peer-to-peer and merchant transactions. On an average, UPI processed nearly 675 million transactions every day during the month.

The new record surpasses the previous monthly high registered in June, highlighting the rapid adoption of the payment platform across the country.

Daily transaction value remains strong

The average daily transaction value also remained robust during July.

UPI processed transactions worth around ₹89,700 crore every day, demonstrating its increasing role in everyday payments ranging from grocery purchases and utility bills to e-commerce and business transactions.

Industry experts say the continued rise reflects growing confidence in India’s digital payment infrastructure.

Digital payments continue expanding

UPI has become the backbone of India’s digital economy since its launch in 2016.

The platform enables instant bank-to-bank transfers through mobile applications and is now supported by nearly all major public and private sector banks, fintech companies and payment service providers.

Government initiatives promoting digital payments, combined with the widespread availability of QR-code-based merchant payments, have significantly accelerated adoption in both urban and rural areas.

FASTag transactions decline

While UPI achieved a record month, FASTag witnessed a decline in transaction volumes.

NPCI data showed that FASTag transactions fell compared with June, indicating lower toll payment activity during the month. The reasons for the decline were not immediately specified, although seasonal travel patterns and traffic variations are often cited as influencing factors.

Despite the monthly dip, FASTag remains India’s primary electronic toll collection system on national highways.

IMPS and other payment systems

Other NPCI-operated payment platforms also continued processing substantial transaction volumes.

The Immediate Payment Service (IMPS) remained a key option for instant interbank fund transfers, while systems such as AePS, RuPay and NETC continued supporting different segments of India’s digital payments ecosystem.

Collectively, these platforms continue to strengthen India’s transition towards a less-cash economy.

India leads global real-time payments

India continues to account for the world’s largest share of real-time digital payment transactions.

UPI’s rapid growth has attracted international attention, with several countries exploring partnerships to enable cross-border UPI payments. The platform is already expanding its presence in select overseas markets through collaborations with foreign payment networks.

Experts believe continued innovation and international integration could further strengthen India’s leadership in digital payments.

Conclusion

July’s record-breaking performance highlights UPI’s continued dominance in India’s digital payments landscape. With transaction volumes crossing 20.94 billion for the first time and values exceeding ₹27.81 lakh crore, the platform continues to redefine the country’s payment ecosystem. Although FASTag recorded a monthly decline, India’s broader digital payments infrastructure remains on a strong growth path.
