Former Assam CM’s Daughter Involved in Controversial Assault on Family Driver
A viral video surfaced on Monday, allegedly showing the daughter of former Assam Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta physically confronting and verbally abusing a driver. In the video, the man is seen kneeling while Mahanta’s daughter, Kashyap, berates him and strikes him with a slipper. The incident occurred within the high-security MLA Hostel complex in Dispur, Assam’s capital, with other witnesses present during the altercation.
Kashyap, in a statement following the video’s release, explained that the driver had worked for their family for several years but had a history of being frequently intoxicated and making offensive comments towards her. “He is always drunk and passes remarks on me. This has been an ongoing issue, and we have tried to reason with him. But today, he crossed a line by banging on my door,” she said.
When questioned about why she hadn’t filed a police report, Kashyap declined to answer directly, instead expressing concerns about how women are often blamed in such cases. She also chose not to disclose the driver’s employment status, suggesting that public safety for women should be addressed in broader societal terms.
It remains unclear whether the driver was a government employee or privately hired by the family. Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, who served as Assam’s Chief Minister from 1985-1990 and 1996-2001, is no longer an active legislator but has been allowed to stay at the MLA hostel with his family.
