In Gadag district, a 26-year-old man, Sanjay Koppad, was shot in the leg by police after allegedly attempting to attack officers while being escorted to a crime scene for a site inspection. Koppad, who faces over 12 criminal cases across various police stations in the district, was involved in a recent incident on Thursday on the Lakkundi-Kanaginahala road.

During the incident, Koppad reportedly threw stones at police officer Prakash Ganiger. In response, Gadag rural police sub-inspector Sangamesh Shivayogi fired at Koppad to prevent his escape. Both Koppad and Ganiger were subsequently taken to the Gadag district hospital for medical treatment.

Superintendent of Police BS Nema Gowda stated that Koppad is a well-known criminal in the area with a history of charges including attempted murder, robbery, and extortion. “We are committed to pursuing all charges against Koppad, including the recent assault on our officers. The ongoing investigation will ensure that strict legal actions are taken,” Gowda affirmed.

Koppad, who allegedly impersonated a police officer and threatened a person on Kanaginahala road on June 3, was charged with robbery and has been linked to the theft of gold jewelry worth ₹5.85 lakh. The rural police have recovered the stolen jewelry and continue to investigate the case.
