The Lord of the Rings Online (LOTRO), the long-running massively multiplayer online role-playing game based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s fantasy world, has launched its latest expansion, The Wolves of Mordor. Released on October 28, 2026, the expansion takes players into previously unexplored parts of Mordor, introducing new regions, fresh storylines and gameplay systems that expand the nearly two-decade-old game.

The expansion explores the legacy of Sauron and the dangerous creatures that remain after his defeat. Players will venture into the eastern reaches of Mordor, where the Dark Lord’s influence continues to threaten the Free Peoples of Middle-earth.

The release marks another major content update for a game that first launched in 2007. With new environments, character progression mechanics and a deeper focus on player housing, The Wolves of Mordor aims to offer a mix of challenging adventures and quieter social experiences.

New regions explore Mordor’s forgotten corners

The expansion introduces three new regions: Heledhris, Parth Rhavas and Nan Ogol. These locations expand the game’s depiction of Mordor beyond the areas players have previously explored, presenting landscapes shaped by the Dark Lord’s long rule.

Heledhris and Parth Rhavas feature rugged terrain and the lasting scars of Sauron’s domination. The regions are designed to give players new places to explore while continuing the story of a land where the defeat of its ruler has not eliminated every danger.

Nan Ogol offers a different atmosphere, featuring a volcanic jungle and the remnants of Sauron’s experiments with ancient creatures. Its unusual environment adds another dimension to the expansion’s portrayal of Mordor, moving beyond familiar volcanic wastelands.

The new areas also introduce encounters with characters and scouts connected to Gondor, the Elves and the Dúnedain. These encounters help connect the expansion’s story to the wider struggles of Middle-earth.

Werewolves and the legacy of Sauron drive the story

The central threat in The Wolves of Mordor comes from the Draugardh, a distinctive group of werewolf-like creatures associated with Sauron’s history.

The expansion explores Sauron’s earlier identity as the Lord of Wolves, drawing on elements of Tolkien’s wider mythology. Rather than presenting the creatures as conventional fantasy werewolves, the developers have described them as beings with their own social structures and hierarchies.

According to an interview with Standing Stone Games developer Allan “Orion” Maki, the Draugardh can speak and move on two legs or four. Their society and place in Mordor’s history form part of the new narrative.

The storyline asks what happened to these servants after Sauron’s defeat. Although the destruction of the One Ring ended his immediate threat, the expansion suggests that some of the forces connected to his rule remain active.

Players will investigate these threats while travelling through the new regions, uncovering secrets and confronting enemies connected to Mordor’s darker past.

Survival Instincts introduces a new progression system

One of the expansion’s major gameplay additions is the Survival Instincts system, an alternative progression path designed specifically for the new Mordor regions.

The system is intended to give players additional ways to develop their characters while completing content in the expansion. It introduces new skills and traits, including Lessons, Enhancements and Tactics, which can be used to strengthen combat and healing capabilities.

The developers have described the system as an account-based advancement feature. Its purpose is to provide a fresh progression experience rather than simply revisiting earlier mechanics associated with previous Mordor content.

The new approach follows feedback about the older Shadow of Mordor and Light of Eärendil mechanics, which affected character effectiveness in the earlier Mordor region. The development team has said it wanted a different direction for the new areas.

Survival Instincts is initially tied to the Wolves of Mordor regions, but the developers have discussed the possibility of extending the system to future areas as the game continues to evolve.

Neighbours brings new interactions to player housing

Alongside the darker adventures, the expansion introduces the Neighbours system, a new feature centred on player housing and character interactions.

The system allows players to invite companions to their homes, interact with them and gradually discover more about their personalities. Neighbours can have different traits, and activities such as conversations and gift-giving help players learn more about them over time.

The feature adds a more personal and social element to LOTRO. Instead of focusing exclusively on combat, quests and equipment, it gives players another way to spend time in the game world.

The developers have indicated that Neighbours could eventually connect with other game systems, including festivals. For now, the feature represents a new direction for the game’s housing experience.

Access depends on the expansion edition and the relevant purchase arrangements. The official FAQ also states that Neighbours will become available for individual account-wide purchase in April 2027, at 1,495 LOTRO Points per Neighbour.

More instances and a raid are planned after launch

The initial release is not the end of the expansion’s content rollout. Standing Stone Games has confirmed that the raid and instance cluster will arrive after the main expansion release.

The planned group content includes encounters designed for different party sizes, giving players further challenges to tackle with friends and other members of the community.

The developers previously outlined plans for a three-player instance, two six-player instances and a raid. The timing of these additions is separate from the initial release, so players should check official announcements for confirmed availability.

This phased approach allows the expansion to introduce its main story and regions first, with additional end-game activities following later.

Expansion editions and purchase options

The Wolves of Mordor is available through the LOTRO Market, with Standard, Collector’s and Ultimate Fan Bundle editions offering different sets of bonus items. The official FAQ outlines the included Neighbours selections and the additional rewards associated with the higher editions.

Players who are considering purchasing the expansion should review the contents of each edition before choosing. Bonus cosmetics and other extras vary, while the core expansion provides access to its main adventure content.

The official FAQ also says the Quest Pack version of The Wolves of Mordor is planned to become available for 2,995 LOTRO Points in April 2027. It is set to include quest and deed content, Missions and Instances, along with access to the “…And the Verses of Victory” story.

LOTRO approaches its 20th anniversary

The launch of The Wolves of Mordor comes as LOTRO approaches its 20th anniversary in 2027. The game’s continued development demonstrates the longevity of an online role-playing game built around Tolkien’s world.

The expansion combines new exploration and combat with systems intended to broaden the ways players interact with Middle-earth. Its three new regions and Draugardh storyline provide the main adventure, while Survival Instincts and Neighbours introduce additional progression and social activities.

For returning players, the expansion offers a new chapter in Mordor’s story. For the wider LOTRO community, it represents another significant milestone for a game that has continued to receive new content since its original launch in 2007.
