Haveri: The Mines Department has commenced online bidding for 12 sand mining lease blocks in Haveri district, starting from February 28. These leases, valid for five years, include ten blocks in the Tungabhadra River area (Ranebennur taluk) and two in Haveri taluk. The process follows the 2024 KMDC Act amendment.
Initially, 55 blocks were identified—49 in Ranebennur, 3 in Haveri, and 3 in Rattihalli—but only 12 are currently viable due to water coverage. Officials plan additional auctions in summer when water levels drop.
Senior Geologist Naveen SG stated that the department has measured 1,09,065 metric tonnes of sand in these blocks, with a fixed base price of ₹850 per tonne. The government anticipates ₹85.7 crore in revenue over five years. Bidders can place offers between ₹255 and ₹425 per tonne, with the lowest bidder securing extraction rights.
These blocks aim to curb illegal sand mining while ensuring public availability at regulated rates. Costs for bidders include excavation, maintenance, royalty (₹80 per tonne), an 8% DFM fund, and 1.6% tax per tonne. Naveen emphasized transparency, assuring that the public can legally purchase sand for construction.
Residents, including Manjunath Harahalli, support the initiative, citing its role in preventing illegal mining. Former BJP district president Siddaraj Kalkoti urged the government to crack down on illicit sand trade and ensure fair distribution.
