Haveri: The removal of improperly built speed bumps from highways and key roads in the district, as per Supreme Court directives, has left roads damaged due to poor execution by the Public Works Department (PWD) and Karnataka Road Development Corporation Limited (KRDCL). Frustrated commuters and drivers are now holding authorities and elected representatives accountable for the shoddy work.

Haveri’s roads were previously plagued by excessive and non-standard speed breakers, significantly affecting travel comfort. According to official guidelines, road humps should be 20mm high and 200mm wide, but authorities ignored these rules, constructing bumps as high as 10 inches and as wide as one foot. In many places, multiple humps were installed at the same spot, making navigation especially difficult for two-wheelers and small vehicles.

Even after their removal, problems persist. Freshly installed speed breakers, such as those near PDW Cross, remain unscientific. The situation has sparked outrage on social media, with residents sharing photos of the poorly constructed humps and criticizing contractors and engineers.

Nagaraj Kulkarni, a local resident, pointed out the inconvenience of 22 speed bumps along the 7-km Haveri-Agadi stretch on Sirsi-Monakalmur Road. Another resident, Mallikarjun Balehosur, emphasized that while speed bumps are necessary, engineers must follow proper guidelines. He urged legal action against those violating road safety norms.

NN Patil, PWD executive engineer, confirmed receiving multiple complaints and assured that corrective measures, including reducing the number and height of road humps, will be implemented soon.
