At the age of 16, Karnataka Nandi, the famed bull from Haunsbhavi in Haveri district, continues to captivate crowds with its indomitable spirit. Participating in its 140th Horihabba race at Kuppugadde, Soraba, on Monday, the announcement of Nandi’s name drew thunderous applause from thousands of spectators.

Ningappa, the 65-year-old farmer and proud owner of Nandi, arrived with a convoy of supporters from across Karnataka. Adorned with balloons and vibrant decorations, the bull is a symbol of pride and tradition. Its signature race number, 222, has become a hallmark of the events it graces. Organizers often invite Nandi to boost attendance, and its presence never fails to energize the audience.

Ningappa shared his bond with the bull, which began racing at six years old and has since amassed numerous accolades, including luxury items like bullet bikes. “Karnataka Nandi is known as ‘Saalu Habbada Saradara’ (King of Continuous Events),” Ningappa said, emphasizing the bull’s undefeated reputation.

Despite its age, the bull’s unmatched stamina and long-standing legacy make it a respected competitor. Other bull owners hold it in high regard, acknowledging its decade-long dominance in Horihabba.

Shashank, a loyal supporter, highlighted the bull’s celebrity status, noting its entourage of fans and unique appearances at private ceremonies. Interestingly, Karnataka Nandi has even been involved in finding borewell water points in Hirekeruru taluk, showcasing its multifaceted value to the community.
