Haveri: Even as the pre-monsoon picks up pace in Haveri district, a surge in dengue fever cases is posing a major health concern. A significant number of children have been diagnosed with dengue and are undergoing treatment at the district hospital, according to a report by TV9 Digital.
The report states that health officials have detected 162 dengue cases in the district, with a concerning 108 of those cases occurring in children. Over 50 patients are currently receiving treatment at the district hospital.
The geographical spread of the outbreak is also concerning, with cases reported across various talukas including Haveri (10), Badagi (30), Ranebennuru (18), Hirekerur (20), Rattihalli (8), Shiggaon (6), Savanoor (1), and Hanagal (69).
Local health authorities are taking all necessary precautionary measures to curb the spread of dengue. Public awareness campaigns are underway, urging residents to take preventive steps such as eliminating mosquito breeding grounds, using mosquito repellents, and wearing long sleeves and pants when outdoors.
The significant rise in dengue cases this year, compared to only 24 cases reported in 2023, is attributed to the drought and water shortage experienced last year. This led to water storage practices that created ideal breeding grounds for Aedes mosquitoes, the primary vector for dengue transmission.
Doctors are advising residents to maintain clean surroundings, utilize mosquito coils and nets, and ensure proper drainage around their homes to prevent stagnant water. They highlight immediate medical attention for children exhibiting symptoms like fever and vomiting, stressing the importance of heightened awareness, especially among parents.
