In a heartbreaking incident in Madapur village, Savanur taluk, Haveri district, three family members died early Friday morning when a wall of their house collapsed due to continuous heavy rainfall. The collapse occurred at 3:30 am while Chennamma Harakuni, 30, and her two-year-old twin daughters, Amulya and Ananya, were asleep. The family had been using plastic tarpaulin to cover their leaky roof, but the wall gave way despite these efforts.
Chennamma’s 70-year-old mother, Yallamma, was severely injured and remains in critical condition. Additionally, Muttanna Harakuni, 70, and Sunita, 35, sustained injuries and have been admitted to the district hospital in Haveri, with further transfers to Savanur hospital.
Local villagers attempted to assist by clearing the debris but were unable to rescue the victims in time. The deceased have been taken for postmortem, and arrangements for their bodies will be made for their families. The affected family relies on agriculture and owns a small holding in Madapur.
Haveri Deputy Commissioner Vijay Mahantesh Danammanavar has visited the injured at Savanur hospital and assured alternative accommodation for the bereaved family. Former Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai visited the site, offering condolences and financial aid of ₹50,000 each to the deceased families and ₹50,000 for the injured. He criticized the government’s handling of flood and drought issues, highlighting delays in ambulance services. The state government has announced a compensation of ₹5 lakhs per family under NDRF norms. District Minister Shivanand Patil also provided ₹2 lakh in personal assistance to the family.
