Illegal Cattle Trade Sparks Political Row in Dakshina Kannada
Raising alarm over the rise in illegal cattle transportation, Mangalore City North MLA Y Bharath Shetty accused the state government of failing to curb cattle smuggling and illicit slaughter in Dakshina Kannada. He claimed that organisations like Bajrang Dal are being forced to step in, filling the gap left by law enforcement agencies.
Dr. Shetty alleged that under the previous BJP government, stringent measures such as property seizures had effectively reduced illegal slaughterhouses and cattle theft. However, he asserted that since the Congress came to power, these activities have resumed openly, even in residential areas. He accused the government of appeasement politics, warning that if Hindu organisations take matters into their own hands, the administration will be held responsible.
BJP Yuva Morcha district president Nandan Mallya echoed similar concerns, condemning the targeting of cow protectors instead of those engaged in illegal cattle trade. He questioned police inaction, asking how traffickers continue to operate despite being well-known to authorities. “Is there a hidden hand shielding these criminals while suppressing cow protection efforts?” he asked.
The BJP Yuva Morcha has pledged support for Bajrang Dal activists, calling them ‘Dharma Veeras’ and demanding stricter enforcement against illegal cattle transport.
