Severe rainfall and storms have disrupted daily life in Assam, resulting in tragic consequences. One student lost their life when a tree fell on the auto-rickshaw they were traveling in at Dighalbori in Morigaon district. Additionally, in Sonitpur district, 12 children sustained injuries when a tree collapsed onto their school bus.
The impact of the storm is widespread, with trees uprooted in various regions, including Guwahati, due to powerful winds. Lower Assam experienced power outages as electric poles toppled, while waterlogging affected numerous towns.
Authorities have responded by closing schools in affected areas and suspending ferry services in multiple districts. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority issued advisories, urging people to avoid unsafe structures and waterlogged areas, stock essential supplies, and seek help in emergencies.
Emergency response teams, including the State Disaster Response Force, police, and forest department personnel, are actively engaged in relief efforts. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma cautioned citizens against unnecessary travel and assured readiness to address emergencies promptly.
The state remains on high alert following forecasts of heavy rainfall, compounded by the aftermath of Cyclone Remal’s landfall in neighboring West Bengal.
