In a deeply moving act of courage, a 10-month-old child from Mallappally in Pathanamthitta has become Kerala’s youngest organ donor, offering new hope to five patients, including another infant.
Alin Sherin Abraham was critically injured in a road accident on February 5 while travelling from Kottayam to Thiruvalla along the M.C. Road. The car she was in was hit by an oncoming vehicle near a junction. Her mother and grandparents, who were accompanying her, were also seriously injured.
Battle for survival
Following the accident around 2.30 pm, Alin was first admitted to hospitals in Changanassery and Thiruvalla before being shifted to Amrita Hospital in Kochi on February 7 for advanced treatment.
Despite intensive medical efforts, doctors declared her brain dead on February 13.
A decision beyond grief
In the midst of unimaginable sorrow, her parents — Arun Abraham and Sherin Ann John — chose to donate their daughter’s organs.
Doctors confirmed that her organs would benefit five recipients, including a young child awaiting transplant. Hospital authorities described the family’s decision as an extraordinary gesture of compassion and humanity.
Health officials and transplant coordinators noted that paediatric organ donations are rare due to medical complexities and emotional factors. They said the family’s consent would inspire greater awareness about organ donation across the state.
Alin’s short life, marked by tragedy, has now become a powerful reminder that even in loss, there can be life. Her legacy will live on in the hearts of the families she has helped heal.
