In a tragic incident, an 11-year-old boy lost his life after a snakebite in Odisha’s Boudh district, with delays in medical treatment reportedly contributing to the fatal outcome.
Snakebite occurred while child was asleep
The deceased has been identified as Alok Naik, a resident of Sakusinga village under Harbhanga police station limits. According to reports, the incident occurred late at night while the boy was asleep at home.
Family members were initially unaware that he had been bitten by a poisonous snake, despite him showing signs of distress and bleeding.
Delay in medical care proved fatal
Instead of seeking immediate medical attention, the family reportedly took the child to a local sorcerer, believing it could treat the condition. When his condition worsened, he was finally rushed to the district headquarters hospital in Boudh.
However, doctors declared him dead on arrival, stating that the delay in receiving proper treatment had critically reduced his chances of survival.
Need for awareness on snakebite response
Medical experts emphasise that snakebites require immediate hospital treatment and administration of anti-venom. Relying on traditional or unverified remedies can result in fatal delays.
Health authorities have repeatedly urged rural communities to prioritise scientific medical care and seek emergency help without delay.
Village mourns young life lost
The death has cast a pall of gloom over the village, with residents expressing grief over the loss of a young life. The incident has also reignited discussions around the need for better awareness and access to timely healthcare in rural areas.
