In a significant achievement, doctors at Govind Ballabh Pant Medical College and Hospital in Tripura have successfully performed a kidney transplant on a 20-year-old man. The six-and-a-half-hour surgery, led by Medical Superintendent Sankar Chakraborty, saw a team of doctors transplanting a kidney donated by Munna Saha Sutradhar to her son, Subham Sutradhar.

“The hospital recently established a partnership with Shija Hospital in Manipur, which provided crucial mentorship for the successful kidney transplantation,” Chakraborty informed the press.

Chief Minister Manik Saha, who is also an oral and maxillo-facial surgeon and played a pivotal role at Tripura Medical College and B.R. Ambedkar Memorial Teaching Hospital, oversaw the procedural aspects related to the memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the kidney transplant.

Chakraborty highlighted the legal intricacies involved in such surgeries, emphasizing the importance of mentorship from established institutions. “We identified Shija Hospitals and Research Institute in Manipur as our mentor in the northeast region, and they provided invaluable technical support,” he added.

The patient and his parents had previously met Chief Minister Saha during a public meeting, prompting the necessary steps for the transplant.

Gulliver Potsangbam, a nephrologist from Shija Hospitals in Imphal, led the 13-member surgical team, bringing their total kidney transplant count to 114.

Praising the medical team, Chief Minister Saha commented, “Today’s achievement marks a milestone in our state’s healthcare. It’s a feat that was unimaginable until recently.”

“Through persistent efforts to enhance healthcare, critical procedures like kidney transplants are now feasible within our state. I extend my sincere congratulations and best wishes to the medical team and all healthcare personnel involved. I also wish a speedy recovery to both the donor and recipient,” he added.
