Two weeks after a python with a clutch of eggs was found on the Calicut University Engineering College campus, 23 baby snakes have hatched successfully. The eggs were carefully cared for by Periyanippuram Veettil Shihabuddin, a certified snake catcher from Koyappadom near Chelari.
The python and its eggs were first discovered by workers clearing shrubs near the college’s boundary wall. Shihabuddin was called in to safely capture the adult python and relocate the eggs to a special container at his home. While the adult python was handed over to the Forest Department, officials agreed to Shihabuddin’s proposal to incubate the eggs himself before returning the young snakes to the wild.
Using a temperature-controlled thermocol box, Shihabuddin created an ideal environment for incubation. Of the 30 eggs, 23 successfully hatched into healthy snakelings. These hatchlings will soon be handed over to the Forest Department for release.
Though Shihabuddin has been certified as an approved snake catcher by the Forest Department for only five years, he has already rescued and safely relocated over 300 snakes, showcasing his dedication to wildlife conservation.
