A 5.3-magnitude earthquake struck Telangana’s Mulugu district on Wednesday morning at 7:27 am, causing tremors to be felt in Hyderabad and parts of Andhra Pradesh, as reported by the National Center for Seismology. The earthquake has left residents in panic, although no immediate reports of casualties or major damage have been received. Authorities are currently assessing the situation.
The earthquake’s details were shared by the National Center for Seismology on X (formerly Twitter): “EQ of M: 5.3, On: 04/12/2024 07:27:02 IST, Lat: 18.44 N, Long: 80.24 E, Depth: 40 Km, Location: Mulugu, Telangana.” The tremors were particularly notable in Hyderabad, and many people in surrounding areas reported feeling the shake.
Despite this, experts have emphasized that Telangana is typically not prone to significant seismic activity, as it falls under Zone II, which is considered a low-intensity seismic zone in India. The seismic zones range from Zone II to Zone V, with Zone V expecting the highest level of seismic activity. Telangana’s experience of such an earthquake is considered a rare event.
An X user, Telangana Weatherman, noted that it was the “strongest earthquake in the last 20 years” to occur in the region. As the region continues to recover, authorities are advising residents to remain cautious and avoid crowded or unsafe structures during seismic activity.
